there is something on your back.
the midnight entity knowing the doctor’s name is such a simple yet brilliant way of somehow making it even creepier than it already was 🫢
I'll be honest, I don't think the brief appearances of the Midnight entity that we get in this episode are actually what the creature literally looks like so much as it's just a representation of what the mind sees if someone catches a glimpse of it in the corner of their eye or in a shadow at the end of a long sparsely lit corridor.
We only ever see it in those contexts; moments in which the mind can't quite grapple with what it sees, or even if it saw anything at all, and hence it's left as a vaguely blobby and featureless grey mass.
The more theories I come across about The Well, the more I love this episode.
Because we actually don't know anything and it's horrific.
The Doctor thinks he left it all nice and tidy and wrapped with a bow. He saved Aliss. And Shaya sacrificed herself to keep the Midnight entity trapped.
Except there's something behind Mo.
Except there were 4 life signs.
So were there three entities? Or were there two? Were there always many or did the Doctor split it by forcing it to face its reflection?
Did the an entity ever actually move to Shaya or did everyone just assume that and Shaya sacrifice herself for nothing?
Did she pull at least one entity down into the well with her? Or was there just a woman tricked into thinking she was doing her duty, doing some good, even as the entity waited patient and silent behind Mo to get off the planet and into a universe of a playground.
Did Aliss truly think that the entity had left her or did we never meet Aliss at all? Was Aliss long since dead and gone and her body just a puppet the Midnight entity was talking through?
Who broke the mirrors? Who corrupted the security footage?
How did Aliss get that cut to her arm?
Were there even rules? Or was the entity just playing? Was it moving to the person that killed its former host because it had to or did it choose to because it found that the most amusing?
Did it choose to leave Belinda for Mo instead of Shaya because it had learned from its old mistake?
We don't know.
We don't know.
We
don't
know
Maybe the Midnight entity just wants a friend. I could fix them. I could do it.
the midnight entity doesn’t follow rules ….but the tenth doctor’s biggest fear was being incapacitated and helpless as the world got fell apart after the year that never happened with the master and the midnight entity struck that exact terror. and the fifteenth doctor’s biggest fear was that he carried death on his back and doomed everywhere he landed because sutekh latched onto the time vortex and travelled everywhere with him AND THE MIDNIGHT ENTITY STRUCK THAT EXACT TERROR
The first rule of the Midnight Creature is that it has no rules.
The second rule of the Midnight Creature is that if you think it has rules, that's because it wants you to think it does.
Back when the world was made of diamonds, I met something... so vile... it had no face, no name, no self... I've never been so scared in my life.
