Me when Sad, Misunderstood Bad Boy:
Rosalie is not the villain!!!
Rosalie Hale is one of the most misunderstood characters in Twilight, largely because Bella is the protagonist and narrator in twilight and Edward is the narrator in Midnight Sun. We never really get an unbiased view of Rosalie. Through Bella's perspective, she often comes across as cold, shallow, or even cruel, but there's a lot more going on beneath the surface.
At first, Rosalie's dislike of Bella stems from two main things. The first is jealousy though not in the way people usually think. Rosalie was used to being admired for her beauty. As a human, her appearance was treated as her greatest asset because she grew up in a time when her parents viewed her beauty as a means to improve the family's social and economic status through marriage. Over time, Rosalie internalized the belief that her beauty made her valuable. So when Edward showed absolutely no romantic interest in her, despite showing interest in Bella, she took it as an insult to something she had always been taught defined her worth. It wasn't because she wanted Edward; it was because she couldn't understand why he didn't want her.
The second reason is much more practical: Bella genuinely posed a risk to the Cullens. She was a human who knew their secret, which endangered the entire family. If anything had happened to Bella or if one of them had lost control they would have been forced to leave. Rosalie's concerns weren't entirely unfounded. The Cullens eventually did have to leave because of Bella's involvement in their lives.
Then Bella decides she wants to become a vampire, which is where Rosalie's resentment deepens. For Rosalie, this is almost incomprehensible. She would give anything to be human again. Bella has the opportunity to grow old, change, experience new stages of life, have children, and build a future. Rosalie lost all of that the moment she became a vampire. So when Bella willingly throws that future away, Rosalie sees it as a tragic mistake. To her, Bella is a teenager making an irreversible decision without understanding what she might want in five years let alone five hundred.
Another criticism Rosalie receives is her behavior during Bella's pregnancy. Many people argue that Rosalie only cared about the baby and not Bella's wellbeing. But that's exactly why Bella turned to her in the first place. Bella knew Rosalie would prioritize the baby above everything else, even Bella's own safety. Bella wasn't shocked by that, nor did she feel betrayed by it. She specifically chose Rosalie because she knew where Rosalie's loyalties would lie. Rosalie gave Bella exactly what Bella wanted someone who would fight for the baby's survival no matter what.
Honestly, Rosalie is a deeply tragic character. A lot of her actions make more sense when you view them through the lens of someone who lost the life she desperately wanted and has spent decades mourning it. You don't have to agree with her choices, but reducing her to "the mean blonde vampire" misses a lot of what makes her interesting.
And while we're at it, I can't help noticing that Stephanie Meyer seemed to have a habit of making her blonde female characters the antagonistic or "mean girl" types.
Icy (winx club)
icy is often treated as just the “mean one,” but she’s always felt more complicated than that to me.
she’s controlled, guarded, and rarely allowed softness not because she doesn’t feel, but because the story never gives her space to. her leadership comes from fear of losing control, not from wanting attention.
what makes icy stand out is how rarely she’s given understanding or growth. her pain is hinted at, but never explored, and she’s expected to stay frozen in the same role while others are allowed to change.
icy isn’t just a villain. she’s a character shaped by restraint, anger, and unspoken loss and she deserved more depth than the story ever let her have
i think i hate ragatha
because i relate to her the most.
(DISCLAIMER!!! this isnt a hate post!! this is a character insight!!!)
i don't mean for this to be particularly edgy, or a vent post, no not at all. this is more directed to be an insight on HER character, not mine :)
ragatha, oh ragatha.
initially, i found her quite insufferable. dont come for me!
i found her character to be achingly aloof and meek. like she is so annoyingly unaware of the problems around her. her insistent positive attitude and inability to show that she has ANY grasp on the despairing situation. it was unbearable to watch her brush past the reality of everyone's grief and try so painstakingly to be a sort of pacifistic peacemaker when it was not needed!! read the room, girl!
i'm an AVID, "to feel is to heal" kinda girl. all the way. i believe trying to avoid such is a waste of time and making an effort to, not only pretend yourself that every thing is fine, but make an attempt to have everyone else be put into that avoidant, gaslighting mindset.
(dont even get me started on jax in a matter of gaslighting mindsets..)
i found her so annoying. i honestly hated her.
up until after episode four.
gangle mutters out something about her good intentions, but lack of sincerity.
something about that resonated and found its resting place where my soul lay in my ribcage.
something about that felt familiar. too familiar.
in episode five, as well.
the constant bickering, her mental fortitude and battle with her pent up negative emotions, but trying not to be mean or hurt anybody.
it felt so real. so raw.
then watching her bar scene, describing her mother.
everything totally fell into place. taking hits, LITERALLY like a ragdoll, from her mother.
that scene gave a feeling to me. it laid out exactly the mental dynamic she set up for herself.
'but its your mother! you couldnt hate your mother! she may be mean, she may yell and scream and berate you, but she sacrificed so much! you cant complain!'
'dont tell her how she makes you feel, shes got a lot on her mind.'
'you cant be upset, youll just burden her more'
'just be the happy little girl i know you are'
that is EXACTLY what went through my mind hearing her backstory
its like everything about her made sense. because she was like me!
like i said, this isnt meant to be a vent post. however, my mother, initially when i was younger, and she was in the pinicle of addiction, she was very angry. i felt as though it was my job to be a positive light. not only to be less of an added weight to her shoulders -younger me assuming thats why she was so angry and violent at the time-, but to keep my siblings happy.
i didnt want them to worry. and i developed a people pleasing mindset
i became that therapist friend, the advice friend, the one you vent to, the one who's always smiling. the ragdoll!
i became the one who was always a shoulder to cry on, but when it was me that needed such, people were weird.
and i hated that. i really did. i found it insufferable, i wished i could be as shamelessly unafraid to feel the things i felt like everyone else, i hated that i felt the pressure to always be happy.
just like ragatha.
of course, now with my better understanding of her character, i enjoy her presence a little more. as now, i understand shes not the way she is in a way of getting some ego boost from taking a pacifist route through the digital circus, but she just wants to be a light for those around them who cant seem to be one themselves.
but when her light is dimmed, whos going to be there to lead her through the dark?
Misunderstood characters are my fav
He’s so cutie patootie
every time someone mischaracterizes homura as not caring abt the other girls & only caring abt madoka, an angel dies.
like, how could you completely miss the point of rebellion that fucking bad??? genuine question.
tell me you don't see it
dude im so sick of Luka hate. how do you watch weige and still hate him. you cant like ivan and still hate luka. ivan kissed till w/o consent, but we understand the meaning and how they were raised that its not black and white. same for luka. what he did to mizi and till he did because its how hes raised. he doesnt understand its bad. hes doing it because thats what he knows hes supposed to do. AND DONT GET ME STARTED ON HYUNWOO. we already know what he did to his clones so he thought bro was just gonna come back to life. in conclusion luka is just a manipulated baby like the rest of the characters, the most manipulated one in fact!! SO SHUT UP WITH THE LUKA SLANDER OH MY GOD YOU ALL HAVE NO MEDIA LITERACY
