The variegated leaves, of what is probably Phormium colensoi 'Tricolor' (mountain flax), add a dynamic and abstract touch to the border. This evergreen perennial makes a large clump of sword-shaped striped leaves, edged with red. Plants grow best in fertile, moist but well-drained soil in full sun. In colder areas they may be damaged by low temperatures.

In the mixed borders of the Marengo Community Garden, Orkney, the Camassia leichtlinii subsp. suksdorfii Caerulea Group are providing some late spring colour. This tall, clump-forming, bulbous perennial thrives with damp growing conditions. They are excellent between shrubs at the front of a border, amongst other later flowering herbaceous perennials or in a meadow.

A blend of daffodil cultivars including Narcissus 'Actaea' (daffodil) have been planted through this long border in Union Square, Aberdeen. These bulbous perennials are great for providing an early display.

When hard pruned every year the deciduous shrub Sambucus nigra f. porphyrophylla 'Eva' (black elder, syn. Sambucus ‘Black Lace’) can add texture and colour to a mixed border. The plant produces finely cut, almost black foliage and pink-flushed flower heads.
