The Origin of the Hangman

SYNOPSIS (FROM ARCHIE COMICS WIKI)

The Comet enters a police station with some captured thugs from Big Boy Malone's gang. He explains to the police that the testimony of John Dickering is sufficient enough to convict Malone.

After visiting the police, the Comet returns home and is with Thelma Gordon. Since Thelma knows of the double life of the Comet, they began talking, and she wants him to stop his dangerous life, and is ready to marry him. But John refuses, believing his past crimes may never be atoned for, and his guilt will never leave him alone.

While still talking of marriage, Robert Dickering, John's brother, makes a surprise entrance. John is glad to see his brother, but explains that he has work tonight. He suggests that Thelma and "Bob" go to dinner without him.

Meanwhile, Big Boy Malone learns about "Dickering" being a chief witness against him. The gang leader sends orders to kidnap him. A few days later, Malone's henchmen enter John's apartment and grab his visiting brother by mistake. 

Before they can force Bob into their car, The Comet comes to his brother's rescue, but is gunned down in a hail of bullets and mortally wounded. With his brother on death's door, Bob swears to carry on the fight against crime. 

He takes on the name all law-breakers fear -- The Hangman.

REVIEW

Yes, this is published by what we know these days as Archie Comics. Nothing screams kid friendly like people smiling with the shadow of a hanging in the background. And it’s not just this feature, it’s the whole book that is way darker than usual.

In case you were wondering, this is considered the first super-hero “death” in comics (because comics were so popular during the Golden Age, it is possible that another death happened earlier that didn’t make it into history). The reasoning for killing off the Comet was that Cole left MLJ and no one could keep up making stories like him (he would do Plastic Man at Quality Comics). They decided to replace this wacky super-hero with a dark and menacing hangman (who doesn’t actually hang the criminals himself). I also find a bit awkward that the character was also replace in his relationship by the new character.

In case you were also wondering, the hero didn’t really die, he was teleported to a distant planet were he ruled for a while and then came back to join the Crusaders. But that would be later.

It’s odd how comics went into the darkness so quickly. It makes sense when you consider most of the influences came from pulp novels, but it was still targeted at kids. Kids back in the day may have been less sheltered and the country was trying to stay out of the war... but still, it was a different market. It’s still not “EC Comics” dark, though. Other features in this book have names like Madam Satan. You can imagine it gets darker and darker. Perhaps the reason this stands out so much is because National/All-American/Detective really turned down the violence in their books a little bit. May be a contrast thing.

I give this story a score of 7.
