another thing that struck me was that i led kab shab on friday night, and when discussing it afterwards i mentioned that i hadn’t been sure when to start all the portions of the service that go after silent prayer, like, whether i should wait for everyone to finish.
and the people i were talking to said “generally we wait for everyone to finish, especially if they’re new, except for [name]. he’s a seasoned shul-goer and won’t be at all wrong-footed if you start without him, and also his silent amidah frequently lasts for 10 minutes or more after everyone else is done. it would probably be amazing if we all could pray like that, but we don’t, and people start to lose attention, and [name] expects us to go on without him.”
(the named, or rather unnamed, person is an incredible presence in the world and i am so glad and privileged to know him. he is currently in yeshiva and learnt that one cannot climb trees on Shabbat (because of the concern of breaking twigs off, which is melacha), and responded by making a point of climbing more trees during the week in order to distinguish Shabbat and make it special. he is a beautiful soul.)
anyway, the part of this that struck me is that -- yes, it would be good if we could all muster very long amidot, and that there’s nothing stopping me from praying a 20-minute (or however long) amidah. i can take that time and use it for connection to God! i can do that! there’s nothing stopping me!
and i did. and it was great.
i know it sounds stupid but it was a huge thing for me
