This is it! The final chapter of Frail Deeds is now up, plus an author’s note with the road not taken in this fic.
I’d originally planned an epilogue, but for once I came up with an ending I loved without agonizing over it. Last lines get me. So when this one fell into place beautifully, I decided to nix the epilogue and end the story here.
Much appreciation for everyone who’s been on this journey with me and taken the time to comment or kudos. =)
Now I have to get over my bit of long fic-hangover and settle on a new idea... but for now, enjoy the finale!
ffwd to Molly at age 20 something as a linguist with the Daystrom Institute, finally receiving the placement she's been requesting since she finished her degrees
'oh another human academic here to study ancient Bajoran, how original' 'what do you want to bet they've read some religious texts and think they're an expert, while they couldn't even order hasperat without sounding like a textbook'
then Dr. O'Brien bounds off the transport with the little doll Lupi sticking out of her pack, greeting her new colleagues with the most casual friendly Bajoran phrase that her Aunt Nerys taught her (albeit a while ago), along the lines of 'howdy my dudes'
Julian looked at his watch. Only thirty minutes had passed. It felt like hours.
“Molly? Can you and Garak try another game? I’m going to go back to work for awhile.”
“Julian! We said best out of three.”
Julian was quickly losing patience.
Garak quickly jumped in.
“Now my dear, you’ve already won the first two. Surely it’s unnecessary to play another game to know that you’ve won.”
“Best of three means we have to play three games! Besides, you have to at least try to beat me.”
Garak looked at Julian.
“My dear, can we take a short break? Julian and I need to talk for a few minutes.”
“All right.”
“Garak, you said I’d hardly know you were here.”
“My dear, how was I supposed to know that kids were so, shall we say, directive?”
“Anyone who’s ever spent time with them knows that! Haven’t you ever babysat before?”
“Well, no.”
Julian sighed.
“If we have to play this game again, we should strategize. You were an agent for the Obsidian order, can’t you read people well enough to gain some insight in a simple game?”
“I’m not the one who is shown the same cards again and again. If you put some thought into your guesses-“
“Are you two fighting?”
“No, dear. Go back to playing. We’re almost done here.”
“Surely your genetically-engineered brain gives you a better memory than you've displayed so far-“
“I'm trying to go through the casualty reports while we play! If someone had kept the kids occupied the way he promised-“
“I'm bored. When will you be ready?”
“Just a few minutes, dear.”
“That's what you said before!”
They exchanged a long look.
“All right. Let's start again.”

The ship you always forget to give love to: n/a i think (unless i forgot hahah)
Ship your OC with a canon character (if applicable): yes! in my fic neutrinos in bloom (four years post-canon in which everyone returns to ds9 for julian and garak’s wedding) i invented an oc, their adopted daughter ulaya who becomes fast friends with molly o'brien, and in the sequel/threequel i planned but may or may not ever get around to writing, when they become teenagers/adults they fall in love
