Trektober day 9: different first meeting
"Hey! Stop!" Jake took off, long arms wheeling, making a spectacle of himself. As he ran away, Nog slipped into the abandoned sweet shop. All Jake had to do was stay ahead of the shop owner until he got tired or decided he couldn't be away from his shop anymore.
It proved easier said than done; though Jake had been on the station a few months and knew several secret passages and shortcuts, the merchant had lived here for years and wouldn't allow himself to be outmaneuvered. He pursued Jake through the Promenade and up to the second level, barely more than an arm's length away.
Jake frantically scanned the second level, praying for a crowd to get lost in. No such luck- there was a gaggle of officers, but Jake had no hope of blending in with them. A little past the officers, though, a young woman sat by herself at one of the tall tables. She had a long tablecloth draped over it, and Jake honed in on it with a burst of speed.
"Excuse me!" The young woman squeaked as Jake dove past her skirt and curled up under the table.
"Just act casual, please!" Jake peeked out from under the tablecloth and saw the merchant dodge and weave around the officers, muttering apologies. His green boots marched up to the table.
"Have you seen a human boy running through here?" he demanded, not even pausing for a greeting. Jake wrinkled his nose, any hint of guilt over his thievery vanishing like mist. "The station commander's son?"
The girl didn't say anything, but Jake guessed that she shook her head. "Are you sure?" Again, she must have shaken her head. The merchant scoffed. "Useless half-breed," he grumbled, and still, the girl stayed silent.
The green boots stalked away. After a moment, Jake flinched when the girl tapped on the table. He poked his head out. "All clear," she said, and Jake clambered out.
"Thanks, sorry I-" Jake froze, and swallowed. Tora Ziyal ducked her head, and Jake immediately felt like a jerk. He cleared his throat. “Thanks.” Ziyal glanced at him, then turned back to her table.
“You’re welcome,” she said in a small voice. Jake was tempted to use the offered escape, but found himself unable to walk away just yet.
“He’s a jerk, but he makes good jumja sticks, so- oh, wow.” Jake’s eyes went wide, and Ziyal’s grey-tinged cheeks got a little pinker. The table was absolutely cluttered with drawings and paintings, and the reason for the tablecloth became evident- the table would have been a complete mess without it. Visual art wasn’t Jake’s area, but he knew abstract when he saw it. The way the colors and shapes blended together drew his eye, and the more he looked the more layers he found to examine.
“Wow,” he said again. “These are really good. I didn’t know you were an artist.” All anyone seemed to know about her was that she had been abandoned by her father, the Cardassian commander of the station. She had been offered a place at a home for Cardassian-Bajoran children planetside, but from what Jake had heard she had asked to stay. He saw her hanging around Garak’s shop sometimes, but it was unclear if she worked there or just liked being around another Cardassian. Nog liked to whisper that her father had left her behind as a spy, but Jake couldn’t believe anyone could treat their kid that way. His own dad would tear space-time apart before leaving Jake behind in enemy territory.
Ziyal shrugged. “It’s just a hobby.”
Jake leaned closer. “Do you take lessons? Do you want to be an artist?” The more he looked, the paintings came together into several almost coherent pictures. He saw the station, and the galaxy, and the outline of a sad face. Ziyal shrank away, and Jake straightened awkwardly out of her personal space. “Sorry, I’ll uh- I’ll leave you alone. Thanks again.”
Jake took a few steps, then spun around. “Do you wanna come?” Ziyal gave him a startled look, like she wasn’t used to being asked where she wanted to go. Jake jabbed a thumb over his shoulder. “My friend may have liberated a few jumja sticks while I- uh-”
“Created a diversion.” Jake chuckled awkwardly and scratched his neck.
“Right. Anyway, you’re kind of an accomplice, so you should get a share.” Ziyal tilted her head with a probing look like she was trying to parse out some hidden meaning.
“I’m not a huge jumja fan,” she said eventually.
“Oh, Nog will have grabbed loads more than that,” Jake promised. He wasn’t sure why he was fighting so hard to get Ziyal to follow him: it wasn’t like they knew each other. But the way the shopkeeper had sneered and scoffed at her rankled him. He wanted to prove that decent people didn’t treat others that way, least of all pretty girls who were good at art.
Jake’s cheeks burned.
“Your friend won’t mind sharing?” Ziyal asked skeptically. Jake could already hear Nog’s griping, but he waved away her concern.
“Nah, he’s a giver. I can help carry your stuff, come on.” Ziyal narrowed her eyes at him, and Jake bounced on his heels.
“All right.”
