30%
The percentage of global investment banking revenue for which European banks accounted in the first quarter, the lowest first-quarter level on record
European investment banks continued to lose ground to their U.S. rivals in the first quarter.
European banks captured just 30% of global investment-banking revenue during the first three months of the year, the lowest first-quarter level on record, according to Dealogic. Meanwhile, their U.S. competitors grabbed half of all global investment-banking fees during the period, the highest first-quarter share since 2002.
Investment-banking revenue includes the fees paid for advice on M&A, debt and equity underwriting and syndicated loans.
Due to higher capital requirements and weak economic conditions, among other reasons, Europe’s largest banks have trimmed their investment banking activities during the past few years. That has allowed U.S. firms to swoop in and grab market share. In the first quarter, U.S. banks grabbed the top five spots in Dealogic’s ranking of global investment-banking revenue for the first time since 2006. More telling, European banks captured 59% of fees from Europe, the lowest first-quarter share since 2002. U.S. banks, meanwhile, raked in 36% of investment-banking revenue generated in Europe, and grabbed five of the top six spots in the European rankings.
U.S. banks also beat out their European peers for merger-and-acquisition fees in their home markets, with American banks’ share overtaking European banks’ share for the first first-quarter period since 2002.
