it’s called The Girl From the Sea and it’s by Molly Knox Ostertag - who is that, you ask? She is a cartoonist and a writer for memorable The Owl House episodes including Enchanting Grom Fight and Yesterday’s Lie as well as, oh? The wife of ND Stevenson?! Anyway, definitely check it out:

I’m learning how to color digitally, and this is my very first attempt at an illustration that’s not just spot color or achromatic shading! It’s Morgan and Keltie from the YA graphic novel The Girl From the Sea by Molly Knox Ostertag, which is a very cute queer summer romance featuring a loveable selkie, a tightly wound gay teenager, and a little bit of ocean magic.
I, uh, went off-prompt for Selkie September, but since Keltie is a selkie, maybe it counts?

She turned away before her girlfriend could say anything, her heart thumping in her chest; she fixed her gaze on Serena’s dwindling shape, and her hands pulled the seal-skin tightly around her, clutching like a lifeline. A deep sea-air breath filled her lungs, her purpose set. “You can’t swim like this, without… but- but I can.”
When Serena falls from La Reine De La Mer, Keltie isn't the one who swims after her, not this time.
After reading The Girl From The Sea and falling in love with Morgan and Keltie's relationship, I just had to write a fix-fic for it...
so I read “The Girl From The Sea” last night (wonderful book, very funny, very gay, very wholesome, kinda sad sometimes, very cute) and I noticed:
Keltie looks similar to Amethyst from Steven Universe if she had a human form!! I mean: short, kinda curvy-chubby, kind of broad shoulders for a young girl, tan skin, long, wild, messy bleached hair, button nose, pretty face, beautiful eyes.
she even has a purple shirt she wears all the time!! and it has stars on it!!
they’re also very similar in personality, they’re both very goofy and silly and fun. they appear confident and uncaring of other people’s opinion but they also have insecurities. they’re very loud and openly affectionate. they love exploring human stuff, they’re optimistic until they hit their emotional breaking point. THEY’RE BOTH SHAPESHIFTERS, KINDA
Disclaimer: I’m not saying this as a bad thing. I don’t think Molly did this on purpose, I’m not calling her unoriginal or a copy cat or whatever. the book is wonderful and Keltie is a wonderful character, whom I love so much. I definetly don’t want Steven Universe fans badmouthing the book because it’s a great book.

Re: The Girl from the Sea artwork, what do you think Morgan Kwan would enjoy most about transforming from a human girl into a Selkie?
Hmmmm - the thing is I didn't immediately see it as an enjoyment thing? The way I see her is that if she finds any way to get back to Keltie, she'd become a teeny bit hellbent on it - like I think she should get to be a little unhinged, as a treat, to return to her GF; it's a mix for me of her still having her kinda anxious energy while also being more open to spontaneous stuff since everything that happened. Which means I don't read her as thinking about the long term or anything in that image, she's just diving right in. That being said, I think she does kinda find the sea comforting to be in, especially now, and I think between that and getting to reunite with Keltie it would feel like coming home for her? Like putting something right that was wrong.
