i found out that one of the songs on the s3 tracklist was called "wedding dress" and got VERY excited.
this drawing was so fun, both to conceptualise and to draw. the time elapsed on procreate is around 14 hours (which i honestly think is a new record for longest drawing) over a few days. god bless easter break.
when i was coming up with his outfit, i created a pinterest board of a lot of artsy wedding dresses. i kept thinking about something between a corset and a straight jacket, i kept thinking about bondage looks and wanted to go as far away from tradition as possible, but realised that marie antoinette drag look in s1 actually already did that lol. either way, i knew i wanted asymmetry and lots of accoutrements. it needed to be everything, while still being stage appropriate. i think the dress i chose in the end encapsulates that nicely! i loved the colour scheme as well, the different shades and tones of white and off-white.
the lace was a lot of fun to do - there are two different lace patterns in this dress, which i drew on a seperate canvas and then imported. it was pretty fun to turn my brain off and draw some repeating patterns lol
with accessories, i kept it pretty simple. i wanted the dress to be the main focus, so when it came to jewellery i decided on a red ribbon around his neck. the thought for this was the fashion post-french revolution. i thought that was very lestat. i wanted to emulate the ruby choker we saw in the initial tvl teaser, and i think its both funny and bitchy for lestat to wear a wedding dress AND honour his neck wound. very cyclical. aww. i thought of giving him the pearl choker with rubies, but eventually decided that pearls would clash with this outfit - which is a TRAGEDY for me specifically because i love drawing pearls so much. i also thought of pearl earrings but had to scrap them for the same reason :( i couldnt resist the garter though. i think garters are sooo beautiful and i think it compliments the dress perfectly. if im not allowed pearls, ill fill this drawing with as much lace as humanly possible. ultimately, the pop of red on his ribbon is perfect - it honours both his neck wound and his vampirism, without being too gauche or too costumey. there are plenty of wedding dresses covered in blood out there, but i decided to keep it toned down.
i wanted to give him a wedding ring (for obvious reasons) and remembered our lord and saviour anne rice actually made a whole post about the loustat wedding !! and in the post she mentions that they exchange emerald rings. i was really excited when i read that, but im afraid the ring didnt look right because it was too small to really make out. i eventually decided against rings, which is a shame because i love drawing them as well hehe.
i want to make it clear, im glad i scrapped these ideas. i love the final product and it all came together exactly as i wanted - if i went overboard on accessories like i originally wanted, the drawing would have looked too busy and hard to distinguish. im just explaining my process because i put a lot of thought into this drawing !! and if i cant nerd out on my art account... where am i supposed to nerd out hehe....
anyways, enough insane yap from me. i am so excited for s3 !!
you felt freer to hold her hand in paris… i wonder why that is.
