is andromeda everything you hoped it would be?
every day's an adventure. even my nights off are interesting.
I saw one (1) singular gifset of Reyes Vidal, a character I haven't thought about in probably a year, and now I'm fighting the urge to replay Mass Effect Andromeda or read/write Reyes/Ryder fanfic again.
The hold he has on me, I swear.
From Scorched Earth, A Phoenix Rises Chapter 10
Title: From Scorched Earth, a Phoenix Rises, Chapter 10
Fandom: 911, Hawaii 5-0
Pairing: Buddie, McDanno, BuckTommy (breakup), minor Deacon/Hondo (SWAT, platonic) and Reyes Vidal/Scott Ryder (Mass Effect Andromeda)
Tags/warnings: (eventual) explicit sex, canon divergence from end of season 7, character bashing (Tommy Kinard, Helena Diaz), child abuse, canon typical violence, sentinel/guide AU, spirit animals, anchors, BuckTommy breakup (this fic is very not friendly to Tommy Kinard), first time, Bad Diaz Parents, minor pairings are used in place of OCs.
Summary: An anchor, however fragile, can keep even an offline sentinel from manifesting as long as it is maintained. When his anchor is removed, Eddie Diaz enters a deep zone. Can Buck, a long unattached guide, save his best friend from slipping away?
El Paso, Texas, 2024
Danny and Steve hit the ground in El Paso and are immediately on the hunt. The smell of aviation fuel and scorched rubber burns Steve’s nostrils as he inhales instinctively, looking for the soft scent he picked up from the scent pack Athena Grant had provided him so he could track Christopher.
They’re met on the tarmac by several Texas Rangers, all of which are bonded sentinels and include the man Steve had reached out to earlier—Major Alec Ryder.
“There was an empathic event in one of our suburbs,” a grizzled older sentinel informs them. “About three and a half hours ago. We’re working on locating the epicenter, but we’re having to go house to house.”
Danny’s eyes are ice blue as they flash to Steve’s. “Babe, what do you want to bet we got an upset baby guide that just came online?”
“No bet,” Steve growls and gives the address for the Diaz grandparents.

For you @katlakitty, you did say more no?
Reyes holstered his gun, and Phantom took a step back, offering an open hand.
“Glad you’re seeing things our way,” Reyes was about to take Phantom’s handshake, instead he grabbed Reyes’ wrist and placed a holo chip in his palm. “What’s this?”
“My terms.” Phantom said in a matter of fact tone, “You’re not expecting me to do this for free, are you?”
Reyes felt a headache coming on, but he no longer had the energy to argue. He knew how meticulous this man could be when it comes to his jobs but this is just fucking ridiculous. After the resources he had to spend to hunt him down, he should be charging him instead. But he knows that he’ll be able to recover the losses when they agree to a deal, so he sat down on the couch while pulling up the virtual contract.
It was easy enough to understand with all the complexities. From his cut on the goods, the services he will be offering (sniper, hacker/programmer, information broker, infiltrator) and the kinds of jobs he was not willing to do unless it was necessary. They were workable, but he stopped at one of the clauses and turned towards Phantom who had stood up from his seat.
“You’re planning on leaving as soon as you determine that I got what I want?”
Phantom hummed an affirmative as he pushed a panel by the far end of the room to retrieve the bottles of booze that Reyes had been hiding. (He doesn’t even want to ask how Phantom found them). He brought out two glasses and a bottle of whiskey, placing it on the table in front of them with a resounding thump.
Phantom filled up the glass halfway, “You want the port don’t you? Once you get it, I leave. Simple.”
Reyes narrowed his eyes at the hooded man, this was how they usually negotiate with each other. It had become a ritual of sorts for the two of them to share a drink whenever they talked about business, but this deal sounds suspicious. “Too simple. What’s the catch?”
Phantom waved him off, “It’s not something you need to worry about,”
Reyes scoffed as he could hear the smirk in his altered voice. “It sounds like it SHOULD be something I need to worry about.”
Phantom slid the glass towards him, “All I want is for you to show me how the Collective works.”
Reyes glared at Phantom and hissed at him, “Out of the question.”
Phantom tilted his head, “Even when we both know I can make things more efficient?”
Reyes’ eye twitched, he pushed the glass away from him, its contents spilling on the table, “What are you fucking after?”
“Nothing!” Phantom snickered as he put the glass back to rights and filled it up again. This time pouring the whiskey past the halfway point of how Reyes usually takes his drink. It was his signal that this was his last chance to take the deal. “I just need something to occupy my hands with, besides doing whatever else you’d like me to do.” He took off his mask and sneered at the smuggler, “You don’t want me getting bored, do you?”
Reyes ran a hand down his face as Phantom offered him his glass again. This man does get quite chaotic when he says he's bored. It had involved setting off explosives that shook most of the slums back in Omega. Kadara wouldn’t be able to withstand something like that.
“Curiosity may have killed the cat, but satisfaction always brought it back. Besides–” Phantom drawled and filled up his own glass, “-what else could be more fun than causing you a few headaches every once in a while”
“I fucking hate you.” Reyes grumbled as he picked up his drink.
Phantom grinned, “So, do we have a deal?”
Left with no other choice, Reyes raised his glass for a toast.
Phantom grinned. “Let me give you a piece of advice that I always say to my employers.” He picked up his drink and pointed a finger at Reyes, holding his whiskey glass loosely between his middle finger and thumb, “If you betray me or even so much as try to dig into my identity using the work I do for you, I will pay it back a hundredfold, got it?”
Reyes smirked, it wasn’t advice at all, it was a warning. Reyes leaned forward, “As long as you don’t blow up any of my hard work then we’re good.”
They clinked their glasses together, sealing their deal. Reyes took a sip of his whiskey while Phantom swirled his drink, a mischievous smile on his lips. “Then should we get started?”
Reyes coughed a bit, “Huh?”
Phantom downed his drink in one go and slammed the empty glass on the table with the kind of hiss a man who knew he didn't have another choice would make. “Bring me to Draullir and tell me what needs to be done.”
Reyes shook his head, and continued to lay back on his seat, “Why should I? I’m not your caretaker.”
“Are you sure about that?” Phantom grinned with that Cheshire grin that Reyes always dreaded to see. It always spells bad things in his future when he gives him that smile. “The Charlatan is just going to let me MUCK about inside the Collective–” he leaned in close making Reyes lean back “—Unsupervised?”
Reyes stared dumbly at Phantom as he pulled away with a smug lopsided grin on his lips. Reyes sighed, he’s going to regret this, isn’t he?
"Let's get to it, Vidal!" Phantom said cheerily as he put his mask back on. But as soon as the door to the private room opened a cacophony of gun safeties clicked around them and Phantom stopped in his tracks. “A welcoming party for me?” he turned to look at Reyes, “You shouldn’t have.”
He clicked his tongue and drank his whiskey in one gulp, “Stand down, he’s with me.” he ordered as he slammed the glass down on his table. Though he would prefer savoring his drink, god knows he’s going to need the hit from that whole shot if he was going to get through the day.

In honor of the birthday, I am again sharing my precious. 🥰
And yet again I want to say: If you now or ever have interacted in any way over the years with this little story of mine, THANK YOU. 😭❤️ I love and appreciate you more than you will ever know. This fic, and the process of actually completing it etc., literally changed my life.
Since finishing it, btw, I have made many small edits. And after way too long a break away from writing at all, there has finally been some fic work happening in the background lately! So I am hoping to continue updating the rest of the series soon. <3
I randomly missed them in the middle of the night
