I finally got around to watching Trick or Treat (2007) and I wished I had watched it sooner. I really enjoyed the movie.

Some spoilers below.

One thing that stuck out to me is that it touched on violence done to neurodivergent kids, often at the hands of their own parents. A group of parents pay a bus driver to murder their disabled children because the parents find them to be a burden. One kid notices that things aren't right and attempts to save the kids but end up driving the bus over a cliff.

Later these kids are allowed to have revenge by confronting the bus driver at his house thirty years later. They weren't just tossed aside for a horrifying story, they got go out for blood.

And I can't forget Rhonda, and autistic girl who was invited out to play with some kids on Halloween only for them to play a cruel prank on her that ends with her getting injured. Later when the kids are truly in danger she is the one that gets on the elevator and leaves them at the mercy of the ghosts of the disabled kids that were murdered in the 70s.

Hey. Just a reminder that it's ok to relate to characters that are Bad Representation.

It's ok to recognize how they are described as being similar to how the people who hurt you describe you.

It's ok to project onto their anger, their confusion, their desire for catharsis, their desire to lash out.

they NEED to make more movies about groups of neurodivergent kids just hanging out like WITHOUT the neurotypicals YOU KNOW LIKE MOST OF US DO and show how we all help eachother out like like right ok setting the scene

group of kids all out in the town centre, theyre standing infront of the busiest part, all looking slightly anxious. they have to pass through to get to where they need to go.

one of them turns and says to all the others “OKAY GUYS, WE’RE ABOUT TO CROSS THROUGH THE WORST PART OF THIS AREA. ITS GONNA BE LOUD, ITS GONNA BE OVERWHELMING, BUT WE NEED TO MAKE IT THROUGH. SO HOLD ONTO EACHOTHER, GRAB YOUR COMFORT ITEMS, AND COVER YOUR EARS. LETS GO” and they all just SPEED WALK [because running brings attention and is scary, as we know] THROUGH THIS CROWD, CHECKING ON EACHOTHER AND JUST AS FOCUSSED AS POSSIBLE TO GET TO THE OTHER SIDE. and when they get there they all take a second, celebrate their victory, and move onto their goal destination.

IT WOULD HELP NORMALISE SO MUCH. IT WOULD MAKE SO MUCH SEEM MORE COMFORTABLE FOR OTHER NEURODIVERGENT KIDS. AND?? IT WOULD BE SO COOL. WE ARE FUN PEOPLE AND PROPER MOVIE REPRESENTATION WOULD BANG IM SO VERY PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS

Sooo, Mitchells vs the Machines...

Is a frickin God tier movie!!!!

Easily some of the best neurodivegent rep I've seen in a film in a long time. Aaron and his special interest in dinosaurs just made me so heckin happy!!!! And Katie wanting to find her people and feeling like her family doesnt understand her and her own special interests and hyperfixations just... really hit home for me.

Also the animation style was so brilliant too! The setpeice with the giant furby chase was terrifying, but also really brilliantly shot and honestly made me fall in love with the graphics and stuff like that. And the way it visualized Katie's thought and reactions with the little art edit drawing thingies was so NEAT! And is something I also like to visualise to acknowledge emotions and such irl, so it was great to see consistently expressed onscreen, not something she overcomes, something that is part of her and it's really beautiful! 😢

Also... she cannonically got together with Jade. And wore a rainbow badge throughout most of the movie. And openly showed engagement with her crush. In a kids movie. Not just implied, not just a side characters but an openly LGBTQ+ main character who has a girlfriend by the end of the film. I... is this what love feels like?

And the narrative doesnt focus on these 'qwerks' any more than necessary, no it's an apocalypse movie, a statement on modern technology and its REALLY FUNNY. Like, me and my sister were just laughing the entire way through. Wonderful, wonderful stuff.

Yeah, so anyway, this is a brilliant movie and I encourage anyone who's interested to check it out!!!!
