Please welcome Cariocecus bocagei! A new, basal hadrosauroid from the early Cret. of Portugal! This guy is known from a pretty nice skull, which makes it one of the best ornithopod fossils from Iberia so far! Besides being a pretty skull it enabled the most detailed reconstruction of a dinosaurs inner ear yet and also has a prominent supraorbital bone that gives it such a mean look. I loved doing this little portrait for main author Filippo Bertozzo, very exited for it since I learned about it!

Meet Akinacephalus johnsoni: Newly discovered dinosaur on public lands!

Today the Natural History Museum of Utah has announced the discovery of a new genus and species of an ankylosaurid dinosaur -- Akainacephalus johnsoni. This fossil was found on BLM-managed lands in Southern Utah (specifically within the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument Kaiparowits unit). 

This vast and rugged region, part of the National Conservation Lands is administered by the BLM. The first part of the name, Akaina, is a Greek word that can be translated to spike or thorn. The second part of the name cephalus means head, and the epithet johnsoni honors Randy Johnson, a dedicated paleontology volunteer at the Natural History Museum of Utah who prepared the specimen’s skull.
