Song Review: Widespread Panic - “Smokestack Lightning” (Live, March 20, 2026)

Widespread Panic could’ve just as easily called their version of “Smokestack Lightning” Jojo plays the blues.

Keyboardist Hermann is the featured soloist on piano and organ alongside, to a lesser extent, guitarist Nick Johnson, who plays an innovative solo that begins on the bottom strings before moving to more traditional fretting territory.

Vocalist/rhythm guitarist John Bell is, too, amped up for this down-low number, employing the full range of his voice and turning in some nifty, Bob Weirian swings of his axe.

While this is a true-blue rendering with Hermann hinting at “Spoonful” early and often, this “Smokestack Lightning,” captured on professional black-and-white video March 20 in Florida, is another example of Widespread Panic sounding exactly like Widespread Panic no matter whose song they’re playing and who’s playing in the band.

"First off, I AM bisexual. Just because I'm in a straight relationship doesn't mean I'm no longer bisexual." Nick pointed out before looking over at Anna. "We know Connor's straight, while Trevor is gay. They're both in committed relationships, and of course, we support them." Anna smiled proudly.

Missing has scenes of glitching screens with moments of TV static that create strong strobe effects. The opening production company logos are all separated by this effect. There are two scenes showing rapidly-flashing cameras, and two with emergency vehicle strobe lights at night.

There is a lot of handheld camera work in this film, shot on smartphones. One full scene is filmed from the point of view of a wrist watch, with arm swinging and other shaking at unusual angles.

Flashing Lights: 8/10. Motion Sickness: 9/10.

TRIGGER WARNING: There are scenes of intense abuse from an intimate partner, including threats, insults, and physical violence. Kidnapping is depicted in this film. The main character vomits on-screen in one of the first scenes, looking visibly nauseous for several seconds before it happens.
