I'm giving The Foxhole Court another shot (as a buddy read with @dream-about-dancing) after having been stuck at page 100 for 2 years and I immediately remembered why it was so hard for me to get through: it reads like a fanfic. It's not that the writing is bad (it's okay, albeit a bit pretentious), but it reads like fanfic where no one bothered to tell me what the canon is.
