The Machine Lords are the oldest civilization known to public science in the Null Space setting. The era of their dominance in the nearest outer space is called the Dark Forest due to the fact that any intelligent life that gave signals was destroyed by automatic systems. (An analogy with the solution to the Fermi paradox called 'Dark Forest'.) The Machine Lords lived inside the simulation complexes, in most cases spending their lives from start to finish in virtual reality as artificial intelligence harvested the resources to sustain it. Planetoid-sized robots destroyed worlds by deconstructing them into constituent matter, and also protected their creators by exterminating all intelligent aliens as potential competitors. A very small part of the Machine Lords came out into true reality, in the form of cyborgs controlled by the organic nervous system (by that age, the rest of the biological body either failed or was destructed as unnecessary). But they did not care about the fate of other creatures, which the automation grinded into atoms - thus, this species made enemies from among the surviving creatures and eventually stood on the brink of annihilation in the war with them (and the Great Deathless). On the ruins of the former 'cyborg empire' for many millennia, shard civilizations arose and were destroyed, one of which took the name "rashdah" and lives to this day. Tellingly, the rashdahs themselves look very much like the bodies of the Machine Lords, only entirely biological. Traces of the oldest civilization can be seen anywhere (and therefore they are not valued as artifacts) - it can be either the dome of the simulation complex somewhere in the bowels of the planet, or the wrecks of a deconstructor drone drifting through space, which can be confused with an asteroid. However, no complex technologies have been saved - more than 50,000 years have passed since then, only carcasses and non-functioning mechanics remain.

21) Fuzzy – The Voided, super-soldiers of the Psychocracy, moving so fast that their silhouettes turn into fuzzy shapes.

22) Open – Opening a wormhole by a ftorocyton spacecraft.

23) Leak – Sentient metallic liquid flows from technical openings...

24) Extinct – A huge fossilized mummy of a representative of the extinct Kxi civilization.

25) Splat – A konkrix warrior tests a microwave weapon against a sybberid soldier.

26) Connect – The diyarm, an electromagnetic link between the nyoyars that allows them to communicate telepathically in a limited way.

27) Spark – Exoradiation-contaminated air looks like it's full of sparks. Without a special suit, it is better not to go there.

28) Crispy – Arsh–urcy, a crispy cheap food common in konkrix-controlled space.

29) Patch – Carboplastron, a special material for sealing wounds. It's integrated into the intelligent power armor system, which is used by many mercs.

31) Risk – The spaceship crew takes the risk of flying the vessel into a star in the hope that it will wipe out the VERY dangerous life form on board.
