if you know anyone in oak harbor or on whidbey island, please spread this around! have them email, call, everything and get people to do so by tuesday, 10/17/17. we need to put a stop to this expansion as it is driven by an outside developer in a small community that, honestly, doesn’t need this type of expansion when there is already enough land within already annexed areas.
while urban growth is something that happens, this is NOT the way it should be done.
anyone who lives there knows that oak harbor has screwed things up before (see: that intersection on 20 by walmart or the forest they cut down on 20 and sleeper rd to name two pretty big times). this is the kind of thing where someone is getting some kind of kick-back or the city is being promised something that is not going to happen.
personally, while i know that there are more navy personnel being brought in, i also suspect that there is more than enough housing already there or in the works for them. this is not something that requires an expansion to the city limits into the country and the loss of agricultural land. having spent so much of my life in this community, i’ve also seen my share of things that people do to get away with cheaper housing. they don’t need houses, they need apartments - something easily turned around as the transient military population that lives outside of base housing changes.
please do something to preserve the beauty of this area. the land they are trying to take over is well outside of city limits, is eagle habitat, and has great potential to bring yet more negative impact on both the environment and wildlife. while the owners of the property have a right to sell it, it is not land that should be irresponsibly developed. the location is right next to a historic reserve, there are wetlands that would be affected, a nearby airfield, other farms, and a historic drive-in theater. knowing how people are, this would all be threatened and negatively impacted.
so please, please, if you know anyone in the area, get them active. it takes only a few minutes to copy and paste the information on the below site into an email and send it.
