“Get up,” James demanded, ignoring the grumbling. “We need to talk.” Remus sat up slowly, rubbing the sleep from his eyes. “About what?” he asked groggily, his voice heavy with sleep. James hesitated, running a hand through his messy hair. “I don’t know,” he admitted. “Something just feels… wrong.” Sirius raised an eyebrow. “Wrong how?” “I don’t know!” James snapped, frustration bubbling to the surface. “It’s like… like I’ve lost something. Like there’s a hole in my chest, and I can’t figure out why.” Sirius and Remus exchanged a glance, their expressions unreadable. Sirius leaned back against the couch, crossing his arms over his chest. “Maybe you’re just overtired. You’ve been working too much, mate.” “No,” James insisted, shaking his head. “It’s not that. It’s deeper. It’s—” He cut himself off, unable to find the words to describe the gnawing emptiness inside him. Remus frowned, his brow furrowing in thought. “James,” he said carefully, “do you remember having a nightmare? Or… maybe something happened yesterday that upset you?” James opened his mouth to respond, but nothing came out. His mind felt like it was covered in fog, the memories of the previous night slipping through his fingers like sand. He shook his head again, his frustration mounting. “I don’t know. I just… I feel like I’ve forgotten something important. Someone important.”

What if after regulus obliviated James, James still came back? And regulus is confused, because James doesn’t have any memories of them anymore. To James, he can feel something is missing with every breath he takes. His feet always end up walking towards regulus, like he’s drawn to him. To James, it’s actually very simple. James is only coming back home. The feelings are still there, even if the memories are not
