Another dance au: Race got kicked out after coming out to his dad (but the rest of the family remains in contact). Years later, his dad brings his niece to a dance school and after a few sessions, eventually meets the award-winning teachers only to find out that it's Race along with his boyfriends who teach and own the studio. Race is lowkey scared but is also smug because his dad didn't think he'd go anywhere and now he's won awards for dancing, has great boyfriends and runs a studio ~ Newsie A
Awwww I love this so much!
Okay, so Race lives with his dad and probably only his dad. I think he’s the youngest of like six or seven kids and his mother died when he was little. He isn’t super close with all of his siblings, but he does talk to some of his sisters more than the rest of his siblings.
Now, Race would know he was gay when he was about thirteen. But he’d know that his father wouldn’t react well to it. Lucky he for him, he had good friends.
Jack and Race have been friends since Jack was eight and Race was six. Jack is basically a mentor, a brother and a best friend to him. Jack is this popular kid who plays sports and things like that while Race kind of just follows him around like a little puppy. But everyone loves him too. When Race is fourteen, he comes out to Jack while he’s staying at Jack’s house and laying on his bed (they have this super cute platonic relationship. Fight me.) (Jack lives with Medda, btw.) And Race is seriously afraid Jack might hate him and tell him to leave right then and there. But, without saying anything, Jack just hugs him and thanks him for telling him something that scary and important to tell someone.
It isn’t for another two years that Race comes out to his father. He tells Jack he’s gonna do it so Jack drives him home and tells him he’s gonna wait outside, just in case. And Race would literally sit in the car with him for another hour trying to talk himself up enough to actually do it. So Jack would tell him he wasn’t going anywhere over and over again until Race got out of the car and went inside.
He’d find his dad and he’d tell him after almost nothing telling him several times. His father would kind of do a double take and ask him what he said and he’d have to say it again and his father would lose it. He’d slap Race and demand he take it back because it wasn’t natural and Race would just start crying and he’d try to run out and get back in Jack’s car. But his father would follow him and start hitting him more.
Jack, who had been sitting in his car with the windows rolled down, would be able to hear Race start screaming. So he’d get out of his car and burst in and shield Race from his dad who would be shocked that he was there. And Race would just cling to him and sob until Jack helped him stand. And Race’s dad would tell Race to get out. So Jack would take a Race to the car without letting him even say a word and he’d take him home with him.
That’s where Race would stay for the rest of high school, even while Jack was going to college. Medda would take him in and welcome him and Race would share Jack’s room and get really close with Jack’s brother Crutchie.
But his father would donate all of Race’s stuff to goodwill, so Race would have to get himself new clothes and dance shoes and everything and he’d start kind of acting more like the Race we all know and love. Loud, obnoxious and perfectly lovable.
The years go by. Race moves on. He graduates and tries not to be sad when his dad doesn’t show up. But it’s okay. Because Jack shows up and is the loudest freaking person in the crowd and it makes Race smile so much.
I love these boys.
Race goes to college and majors in dance. He wants to open his own studio. He always has. Along the way, he meets a business major. Sean Conlon. Race calls him Spot because of all the freckles he has and is self conscious of.
And all throughout college, Race is doing all of these shows and competitions and winning prizes and money and is one of the greatest dancers in the country. And, of course, falling for Spot.
The two start dating their junior year. Race has called Jack too many times crying that he thinks Spot doesn’t like him the way he likes Spot and Jack is the supportive dad friend we all know he is.
Spot and Race open their studio right out of college. Spot runs more of the business side of it and they are extremely happy together.
Years and years later, they get a new student. Race thinks she looks familiar, but doesn’t think much of it. Until someone comes to pick her up. And it’s his father.
Race is really scared at first, thinking his father is gonna make a scene or something or take the girl — who Race now knows as his cousin — out of the school entirely, even though she has really enjoyed it. But his father kind of just looks at him and nods and then takes the girl and leaves.
And the girl is back the next week. And the next. And the next.
So Race calls Jack. He tells Jack what’s going on and Jack would come down to see it for himself. And while the class is going on, Jack sits in the lobby with Race’s father and the man would look over at Jack and say something like, “you’re that boy... the one who took him...” and Jack would just nod. And Race’s father would just nod back so Jack would look over at him and tell him so many of Race’s accomplishments and things like that and he’d tell him about so many things that he missed in his own son’s life and Race’s father wouldn’t say much.
But on his way out, he’d shake Jack’s hand. And then he’d just leave.
I love this so much!!
