Manuel is what you would call a weird kid, especially coming from such a small town. Everyone has always known that Manuel is "special", whatever that means, but that never held him back. He’s into "fandoms", strange and noisy music, he always dresses in dark clothes and wears his bangs long, so long that some adults complain they can’t see his eyes. Lautaro is his best friend, he isn't sure why or how they ended up this way, but he loves him all the same. Maybe he loves him a little *too* much. If it weren't for Lautaro, he wouldn't know Marina and Tony, the other people he considers friends, though he sometimes feels intimidated by Tony. Tony is much taller, stronger, more outgoing, and more popular than Manuel, and Manuel suspects Tony might view him as a weirdo.
Lautaro is what you would call a normal kid, he likes playing football (soccer), running, jumping, and riding his bike. He considers himself a simple person, he listens to all kinds of music and gets along with everyone. Adults really like him, describing him as a kind and respectful boy. He simply acts the way he thinks he should, which is kindly and respectfully. Sometimes people ask why he’s friends with Manuel, who is such an oddball, and he says he doesn't really know why. He just doesn't care that Manuel is "weird," and he loves him a lot. He doesn't care what people say. Well, maybe he does care if what they say is something mean about his friend Manuel. He worries about people excluding or mistreating him, and wishes they would dare to get to know him, just like Marina and Tony did. He had thought Tony might be a bit closed-off, but Tony liked him, even if they don't talk much, and Marina, who is always so cool and open-minded, accepted him right away.
Marina is what you would call a small-town girl, she works in her dad’s general store, usually with cumbia music playing in the background, and spends her free time painting her nails and watching the occasional movie, only if she isn't out with her boyfriend Tony. The adults like her, but the kids her age call her dumb, uncultured, and bland, all that sort of thing. She doesn't see herself that way. She genuinely loves doing manicures and hopes to make a career out of it, she believes running a store is noble work, she truly enjoys the music she listens to, and her personality is just who she is: simple, open, and kind. Perhaps that’s why she connected with Tony, people make false assumptions about him too, like thinking he’s all brawn and nothing else. She likes Lautaro because he’s simple and unpretentious like her and doesn't care what people think, and she likes Manuel because he isn't afraid to be himself, even if everyone calls him a weirdo.
Tony is what you would call a popular guy, he likes playing rugby and listening to reggaeton. He doesn't do much else, but he has plenty of friends. Well, as many as one can have in such a small town. Adults don't like him, they're afraid of him, partly because they view him as aggressive and arrogant, and partly because he’s poor, which bothers some people and leads them to suspect he might be a delinquent. The guys who follow him think he’s tough and strong, and while he certainly is strong, Marina discovered that he is also, in fact, extremely sensitive and affectionate. Deep down, perhaps, he feels something is missing and that he ought to be someone else or do something more. That might be why he talks less to Manuel and more to Lautaro, Manuel acts like himself without fear, and that perhaps strikes a chord within Tony, something he isn't ready to face yet.
