I think I've done better with Lucan's descriptions this time around so I hope you like them:

The doctor’s voice was crisp, with a slight melodic lilt to it. He wore his sandy colored hair tied back in a low ponytail, a few wispy strands escaping to frame his face. His smile seemed kind, but there was something about the way he studied her with his pale blue eyes that made her shiver.

His voice and expression reminded her of the cold analysis of the researchers as they performed their tests.

Lucan’s voice was quiet as he wrote on his notepad. It felt more like he was talking to himself than to her.

Thea eyed Lucan, noticing for the first time that he did seem very physically fit. He wasn’t as broadly built as Gram, but his forearms—visible below his rolled up sleeves—were well toned.

I don't think these descriptions really do justice to his personality, but then again, Thea perceives him as cold and indifferent at first. He's actually a worrying mother-hen though, which definitely comes out more in his interactions with everyone.

In lieu of the character description game, what do you have for Alyssa?

Ha! You picked a hard one!

Aly is...not alive in either Beyond the Darkness or Nightshade. She will be in my story about Iris and Nolan at some point, but I haven't gotten that far yet.

I have a few little stand-alone scenes that describe her though:

The picture was a candid shot of a young, pretty woman. She wore a simple dress and held a single white flower in one hand. Her other hand tucked her red hair behind one ear, the rest of the tendrils looking wind blown. Her face was frozen in a carefree, happy laugh. This was how he would always remember her. This was how he wanted to always remember her. Smiling. Happy.

There, in the center, bright red flame of wavy hair and a billowing white dress glowing in the masterfully captured summer sunlight. The subject’s face was turned away, but he knew it—saw it every time he closed his eyes.

Carolus' children have names!

Porcelain von Valancius, called Penny (or sometimes Porky by her brother), her oldest child. Conceived during her time as a guard for merchant ships, after she was exiled from her position as a battle psyker in the military, with a Drukhari soldier who she met and fought during multiple assignments. Coincidence (and skill at survival) had them meet again and again and develop a personal rather than general hatred for each other, which then culminated in an extremely angry and prejudiced one-night stand. About two weeks later she finally managed to kill him. Carolus was in a very bad mental state during that time, so when she noticed she was pregnant she couldn't really bring herself to care. She didn't expect the fetus to be viable anyway, so she decided that either it would kill her and solve her problems that way, or the resulting miscarriage would be of scientific interest to someone. Except that against her expectations when the baby was born she was entirely healthy, if odd looking. Put on the spot Carolus made the decision to be a mother. She built herself up again as best as she could, pretended her daughter was a low level mutant and found a somewhat peaceful colony of mutants in a corner of her sector where she could trust someone to take care of the child while she went off to earn money to send back. When Theodora called her to the expanse she took her daughter with her and found her a safe place on Janus before going on board.

Porcelain is a highly energetic child, easily excitable, and due to her heritage drawn to strong emotions. This can manifest both in temper tantrums to provoke the people around her into anger or things like long monologues of compliments or singalongs to incite excitement or happiness. She is not cruel but oftentimes callous about the feelings of others, since she gets as much out of people's anger or grief as out of their joy. That does not however mean that she doesn't like people, quite the opposite. She easily connects with people, regardless of their opinion of her, leading her to occasionally declare people her friends who deeply despise her, precisely because of their strong reaction. This includes Marazhai, who only got survive his terrible decisions because Carolus is concerned about her daughter's safety without at least rudementary knowledge about the other half of her legacy. He gets brought onboard specifically as Porcelain's babysitter and tutor. He absolutely despises it and Penny, but knows that she is the only reason he's alive and thus cannot just kill her without consequences. She loves him. Absolutely adores him and everything he does end up teaching her. Her mother's influence does remain strong she does not fall into indiscrimenate murder and torture but she does highly enjoy the tussles she has with Marazhai and the occasional hunt he takes her on. He also tendency to just grab her by the scruff of the neck and carry her around like a handbag. She thinks it's hilarious. She also calls him "Uncle Marzipan" and is absolutely gleeful about how much he hates it. He in return calls her "Pentakill" because he decided that her name is terrible and not to be tolerated. The Mon-keigh should be glad he didn't choose a drukhari name.

Leopold von Valancius van Calox is Carolus' son with Heinrix. (Yes there is a whole situation going on my brain how he deals with Penny's existance but that's for later.) He is born sometime during the game, though I have not exactly figured out when yet. When Carolus learnt she was pregnant again she gave Heinrix a decision: he could either claim the child as his or they sweep their prior relationship under the rug and she would never mention the child's parentage. Either way she would not stand his way. She certainly would have been sad if he had decided to deny it, but she would have respected his decision, and it had to be just his choice to make. Some of the officer's would have certainly known, but no one would go against a Rogue Tradr's orders to shut up about her private life. It took him the entire duration of the pregnancy to finally make a choice and only when Carolus went into labour did he break and made his decision to be a father, with the thought that he would come up with a way to deal with Calcazar's judgement some time later. Of course it turned out that said dealing would be both a lot easier and a lot harder than expected. He never did say anything about it, but he went to her chambers, was let in and stayed for the duration of the birth, which was as good as admission. Abelard judged him greatly, for many reasons.

Leopold is a calm child, curious but by far not as exciteble as his sister (who was absolutely extatic about getting a sibling and had to be forcibly kept from the birth so as to not be distracting). Later in his life he showed Psyker abilities, something that concerned but not surprised his Psyker parents. The reveal was thankfully not nearly as dramatic as both his parents' . His sister felt it coming and refused to play with him because of it, feeling unsettled by the weird energies around him. This persisted until he eventually threw a temper tantrum and set a rug on fire, thus confirming both Carolus' and Heinrix' concerns. Although they both he agreed he would have to be sanctioned, they also agreed to never under any circumstances put their son on a Black Ship. Eventually it was decided that Heinrix himself would bring him to Terra, monitor any and all procedures and eventually take him home again. They both leveraged all of their political powers to make sure they could take him back, calling in many, many favours and issuing equally as many threats and bribes. They succeeded. Leopold himself only learnt multiple years after that trip what had actually happened. (I do have notes on a short one-shot about the trip maybe) (How does this work with the whole Warp storm situation? I don't know and frankly I don't much care, both the warp and the god-emperor will bow to my will to ignore canon)

Writing ask: could you describe your OCs from your NaNo story?

Hi there, anon! Sure, I'll gladly give some detailed descriptions of my OCs (I'd love if someone was fond enough of my story to draw them sometime). I'll include a couple of upcoming ones as I've mentioned them in other asks (feel free to check out the story if you haven't). Descriptions below the Read-More:

So I usually give only some of these details when describing the characters in my actual writing, usually broken up so as to not overwhelm. Here I'm just gonna jot out some heavily detailed blurbs.

Malcolm Arthur Carver, goes by Mal, is 22, of Aelbrennic background, an only child, about 6'2, gangly and thin, has somewhat curly, messy coppery red hair and watery blue eyes, large ears that stick out, a light smattering of freckles on his pale face and shoulders. Mal tends to wear turtlenecks, sweaters and t-shirts, usually dark green, blue or grey (sometimes the t-shirts have magic sigils or jokes/sayings on them), as well as dark slacks, trousers and corduroys. Winter gear includes a floppy black woolen cap, a gray-green striped scarf knit for him by an old teacher and a battered brownish-black leather jacket he wears all seasons save summer (he found the jacket on the floor of his father's bookshop one day when he was 16, no one claimed it so he's kept it since). Workboots and soft, scuffed-up loafers are his preferred footwear. Mal has official apprentice Arcanist robes-black with green trim-but he's not fond of how he looks in them (they're for certain university ceremonies only anyways). His pockets are generally filled with all kinds of magic bric-a-brac, usually amplifier rings and his Hex-Key. Mal hopes to make a name for himself as a spellsmith one day, crafting theurge-tech and hex-cores.

Violet Eleanor Carver is 21, Mal's only cousin, about 5'4, with ink-blue eyes and crow-black hair trimmed into a bob, her face round and pale with a sharp grin. She is short, stout and wide-hipped. Her eye color and large ears are the only noticeable features she has in common with her cousin (she takes more after her mother's side of the family and is devoid of magic). She tends to wear black, purple and dark blue, sometimes stripes, usually sticking to sweaters, striped stockings and skirts (billowing, pencil and asymmetrical) and is quite fond of her black wyvern-leather boots. Violet often accessorizes with a purple scarf, three white rings, black fingernail polish and a veil when she's feeling in a melancholy mood (it helps her avoid people)

Aszd-Nash-Krohmbaeutel, or Nash for short, is one of the Aelir, one of the five other races inhabiting the Earth in the post-Transference era. He is about 30 years old, 6'4, slender with ashen-grey skin and bright green eyes (luminescent in the dark), pale silver-white hair worn in a loose braid, a pointed face and pointed, swept-back ears pierced with dangling sword-shaped pins. He wears a heavy mantled charcoal-colored cloak with fiery red whorls along the hem, green-grey robes and baggy trousers underneath. His hands are long and slender, almost claw-like, with very thin, almost unnoticeable webbing between the fingers. Among Aelir, Nash is considered somewhat handsome. Aelir can turn themselves into ash and summon great gusts of wind upon which they can travel the world. They are also strong and subtle in the psychic arts. Nash is accounted skilled in both of the traditional Aelir fields of expertise.

Tanith Khan is 26 and hails from the Fifth Eranshar (a future fusion empire of Persia, Phoenicia, Eastern Egypt and Western India). Her family is large: she has three brothers and two sisters. She is about 5'6, of moderate build and slightly on the chubby side, though with some muscle earned from hard work underneath. She is round-faced and pretty with smooth brown skin, large and expressive smoke-dark eyes, thick black hair often held back with a gold clasp, under a leather work-cap or wrapped in a light scarf. Working aboard a crystal harvesting bio-mechanoid giga-conch with her family and crew, Tanith usually wears slate-and-saffron jumpsuits with multiple pockets and patches. In her off time, she prefers blouses and skirts if relaxing, trousers if tending to tasks, often in rich jewel-tones: plum, turquoise, ruby, emerald, lapis, often offset by something dark. She also has several gold and silver necklaces given to her by family members and a few rings from past suitors (she likes to keep mementos). Tanith also often carries a flower-embroidered satchel in which she keeps a lucky spyglass and a cloud-covered notebook that she likes to jot down her thoughts in. Tanith dreams of the moon and the stars and legends from the other races, other worlds.

Prince Kasimir Sobol is technically an echo-human: a possible person born from bloodlines created in alternate realities that never came to pass, manifested in the mysterious realm known as The Nevermarch. The heir to Leviathan Castle would be about 24, 5'8, with short platinum hair, pale green eyes, harsh eyebrows, pale skin, thin lips, a rounded face with sharp edges that reminds some of sculpted stone. He is stout, stocky and compactly muscled with lithe legs and arms due to many hours spent running and in dueling practice. Kasimir usually wears the uniform of the Knights Regal with princely accoutrements: navy-blue livery with white frogging and silver trim, a white cord from jeweled collar-clasp to shining epaulets, a starlight blade affixed to his belt resting against slate-grey trousers slashed with a black stripe down the leg and knee-high boots. His sigil is a crowned silver skull on navy blue and black. If not attending to royal or militant matters, Kasimir usually wears a short velvet coat, simple white snail-silk tunic and black trousers.

Felix Robbins is a new POV character I will be introducing in Section Two (though his actual POV comes later). Felix is 26, the fourth of seven siblings, about 5'9, wiry-framed, pale-skinned and lithely muscled with a mischievous, shit-eating grin (one that can cave to something more brittle when confronted with genuine disaster). His hair is a dark feathery mess, black with a gold streak running through the messy side-swept bangs (side-effect of an experiment gone wrong). His ears are pierced with simple blue studs. His hazel eyes are mercurial, brimming with intelligence and chaos. Felix has an eccentric dress sense when busying himself with magic and his patron's many research projects-he tends to stick to striped blazers (usually gray and black), checkered or colored trousers (often maroon or cobalt blue), dress shirts in burgundy, wine-red, black, purple, and likes wing-tip shoes. He is not at all fond of official Arcanist robes as he feels they're too baggy. Obscure and abstract usages of magic intrigue him and he's devoted his life to esoteric researches; he also enjoys cooking, swimming and sketching. Felix tends to keep his objects of power hidden but does wear a silver ankh necklace given to him by his first boyfriend some years back.

Amaranthe Wheeler is another new POV character I'll be introducing in Section Two, Felix's partner-in-crime in maintaining the magic research lab of their patron, Arturo Blackstone. She's 25, has a twin sister who has no magic skill (she's a baker instead), about 5'11, biracial with light brown skin, gold-tinged eyes and voluminous wiry dark hair. She is broad-shouldered, long-limbed, with full lips and a bright smile. While Felix and Mal are from the island of Great Aelba (aka Britain), Amaranthe is from the continental part of Aelbrennia (Western France). Amaranthe often goes by the nickname Mara. She tends to wear crumpled white and light-blue dress shirts, dark ties, suspenders, pinstriped trousers, clunky boots and a cloche hat. Of the research assistants, she's the only one who'll wear the Arcanist robes without issue though she prefers a simple white lab-coat. She enjoys rainy weather and prefers springtime to any other season. While Felix tends to esoteric spellwork and artifacts found in their lab, Mara tends to the many creatures found in Arcanist Blackstone's menagerie. She also enjoys singing and poetry.

OK, I have two other POV characters I haven't developed yet and a number of side-characters planned that I'm also still developing. The above characters still have other details and backstories I'll have to figure out as I go along but hopefully that's good for now. Thanks again for the ask! :)

Hey artist friends, I have a challenge for you

I want to know how you would interpret and draw some characters from a story I’m writing. I’ll give their physical descriptions and a description of their clothes, and you show me how you would draw them

Adrian:

Has purple Alexandrite eyes, neck-length black hair swept to one side of his face, and ivory skin. He wears an iron crown, a deep purple stone hanging from one ear, a high-necked black shirt tucked into high-waisted trousers, with an iron corset around his waist. He wears a black cape trimmed in gold and lined in indigo off one shoulder, and high-heeled dragon skin boots and iron bracers. He’s trans, uses magic, and is initially introduced as an antagonist, but he has his own reasons for the way he treats our initial pov character.

Pearl:

Has pale, milky skin and long, cream colored hair, and extremely pale blue eyes. She wears a pink knee-length skirt and a white blouse with lace sleeves. Her pink kitten heels have a small pearl dangling from each buckle. She wears a white pearl headband and carries a small, square white handbag with a light pink rose in the center. She is our initial POV character, and starts out very hesitant and nervous.

Ragnar:

Has tanned skin and chestnut hair pulled back into a low ponytail, choppy bangs framing his face. He has emerald green almond-shaped eyes. He wears a studded leather pauldron over a deep blue shirt, a few belts that would ordinarily hold his sheath and quiver, and dark brown pants tucked into leather boots. The only thing on his belt is Adrian’s Token: an iron dragon curled around a piece of cut alexandrite. He is Adrian’s one confidant and his love interest, and is fully devoted to his king.

Helena:

A dark-skinned girl with onyx eyes and long black braids pulled into a half-ponytail. She wears a yellow sundress paired with a matching flower crown. Her wedge sandals match the woven straw purse slung across her body. She’s one of the most beautiful characters in the story, and she loves to read. She’s also one of Pearl’s best friends.

Cynthia:

Has dark brown hair, tanned skin, and sharp sapphire eyes. She wears wire-rimmed glasses, a smart white blouse, and a deep blue skirt with polished brown shoes. She’s one of the most outspoken characters, and is Pearl’s other best friend, and is very protective of her friends. She carries a matching purse to Pearl, although hers has a blue rose instead of pink.

Victoria:

Long black hair framing a heart-shaped face, with sharp garnet eyes. Her makeup is simple, but harsh, her lips painted with a small blood-red heart. She has blunt bangs cut just above her eyebrows, and wears a high-necked, tight-fitting black shirt, with a red corseted skirt reaching just below her knee. She is Pearl’s newest friend, and has a regal air to her.
