Favorite One-Off Character
Hey guys! I saw a cool post today on the tag from @sensiblydeluded mentioning that their favorite character in this show was Joshua Gillespie and his fantastically practical reaction to the horrifying coffin. That made me wonder who everyone’s favorite one-off character might be. Main and recurring cast are out, so none of the staff of the Insttitute, none of the recurring villains, and probably even people like Antonio Blake who has appeared in multiple stories. Basically, it has to be someone who ONLY appeared in one statement.
I think mine has to be Melanie King. I loved her the second she and Sims started sassing one another relentlessly, and I love how their obvious loathing didn’t stop her from giving her statement. I like that she fits so many of the ‘horror movie heroine’ and ‘plucky reporter’ tropes (follows someone in the dark with only a camera to GET THAT SCOOP), while owning that it was a bad idea. But also acting like she would 100% have done it again, because it worked. It was reckless, but it worked, and she saw something so inexplicable that she had to go to the Institute to talk about it. She was deeply flawed, deeply courageous, deeply arrogant--all the attributes that heroines aren’t often allowed to be without being ‘punished’ for them. I really hope we get her back some day.
Imagine this possibility when the Hair Bear Bunch goes on their mating season road trip:
As in no less than the Southern-sounding ursine cousins Jenny Lee and Emmy Lou (one-offs via the Loopy De Loop short "Bear Hug" otherwise) joining the trio of Hair, Square and Bubi at another of the latter's Camp Volkswagen lakeside venues ... never mind the fondness of Jenny Lee and Emmy Lou for a custom van at its campiest as much as ursine sexual desire of the highest order.
Waverly Walrus headcannon
Even for a one-off character like Waverly (see the "Hollywood Folly" episode of Squiddly Diddly), he can certainly have romantic potential galore--especially among female walruses he manages to come across via his mansion on the Palos Verdes Peninsula close to the former site of Bubbleland. And can this walrus make LOVE, and not feel unnerved at the experience!!
