Carewyn just finished her OWLs! I’ll be posting her results a little later tonight, but first -- a quick run-through of the career options Carewyn was suggested, along with her take on them!
Answer: Yes.
This is actually my headcanon response for where Carewyn will end up, namely as a lawyer working in trials for the Wizengamot. This way she can use her organizational skills and talent for Legilimency to help people, without having to throw herself into active danger all the time like she’s had to as of late. Admittedly she is not a stickler for rules and so might be willing to bend the law if it means doing the right thing, but she certainly wouldn’t factor being a “contact on the inside” for Jae into her decision-making process. *shoots Jae a smirk*
Answer: No.
Carewyn has always been capable at Potions, thanks in small part to her being a Slytherin and thus receiving at least a tiny bit of favoritism from Snape, but she isn’t passionate about it as a subject.
Answer: No.
Carewyn couldn’t be surrounded by people in pain all the time, even if she was Healing them -- her heart wouldn’t be able to take it.
Answer: Yes.
Carewyn loves the arts, especially music, and so finds the idea of being in a band or otherwise working within the music industry rather romantic. The main concern she has is the insecurity of the job and making enough money -- her mother and she are still rather poor, and one thing on Carewyn’s mind is making sure she’s financially independent and can support her mother.
Answer: No.
Although Carewyn is a pretty good tutor and likes the feeling of helping others with their assignments, she really couldn’t see herself working at Hogwarts. Dumbledore frustrates her enough as a Headmaster -- she couldn’t imagine how frustrating he’d be as a boss. And being coworkers with Snape? Awkward!
Answer: No.
Carewyn is kind of tired of all the danger and adventure she’s had to go through thanks to the Cursed Vaults. She wants a career path that’s a bit less action-packed, though still helpful.
Answer: No.
Like Potions, Herbology is a subject that Carewyn is pretty good at, but has no great passion for.
Answer: Yes.
Carewyn’s mum’s a Magical Historian! And really, even if Carewyn is very condescending and dismissive of Professor Binns, she likes the subject, even if she doesn’t like how he teaches it. The big sticking points are Carewyn wanting a job where she can actively help people with their problems and wanting to earn enough to support herself and her mother. Lane Cromwell is a very respected Historian and she was eventually able to pull her family out of poverty through her hard work, but Carewyn is very aware of how long it took for Lane’s job to reap real benefits. Carewyn doesn’t look down on her mum for this, though -- she knows Lane adores history like nothing else and loves that she found a way to make money doing what she loved rather than sacrifice her dreams.
Answer: Yes.
Carewyn adores Care of Magical Creatures as a subject and she’d adore working with Charlie, Liz, and Barnaby, but the role of Magizoologist doesn’t entirely fit Carewyn’s desire to work with and help others. She’d be able to help the creatures she worked with, her co-workers, and any humans foolish enough to get in the way of those magical creatures, but the nurturing of the animals on its own wouldn’t be quite enough for Carewyn. Plus she’s a bit choosy about the magical creatures she might decide to care for: not in the sense of wanting to specialize in one type of magical creature like Charlie, but she wouldn’t be able to care for an Acromantula or a Manticore the way she would a Porlock or a Thestral, like Liz or Barnaby might.
Answer: Noooooo. Nopity nope, nope, nope.
I frankly adored this interaction between Carewyn and Merula because I headcanon it being the moment that Merula finally starts to understand Carewyn and how much the image of her as a great Cursebreaker is something she never wanted, but was forced to take on by circumstance. Admittedly, as Merula reluctantly admits, she thinks Carewyn has some talent in Cursebreaking, but I don’t think before this point she really understood that Carewyn truly did all of this just out of the desire to save her brother, rather than out of any interest in the subject or love of the attention that came with it.
Next up...Carewyn’s OWL results!
