Heard joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life seems harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world where what lies ahead is vague and uncertain.

Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor...Pagliacci is not the name of a character. It is the Italian word for clowns and refers to all the major characters in the Italian opera of that name. Your thinking of Canio who plays the stock character Pagliaccio within that opera."

Before Pierrot, what did we have?

Today i did a research again, usually just because i want to read information about Pierrot/Pedrolino again and again just to beated up the boring. BUT, today is diffirent, my eyes catch this.....familier zanni:

Pagliaccio

The name is very familier, ofc, Pagliacci, that damn famous opera about the tale of Canio, actor and leader of a commedia dell'arte theatrical company, who murders his wife Nedda and her lover Silvio on stage during the play! In the opera, Canio play Pierrot, but Pagliacci? It's mean "clown", but here the funny thing i found our more about this guy: he existed before Pierrot (even before Pedrolino lol), he sometime know for being a counterweight with Pulcinella.

He and Pedrolino are considered one of the forerunners of Pierrot.

Reason? Easy, from what i read from wiki (German one lmao), zinnfigur and some other Italy facebook account, they describe him as clumsy, silly and love playing pranks (pretty much like Pedrolino), lately he fall in love with stories and romantic incidents (just like Pierrot!). And c'mon, look at his clothes!! The only diffirent about him and Pierrot is the hat and the mask!

About his name, its have many meaning but most of it is "mocking" or "mocker", in France is "straw". I found that because his costume make by fashioned a suit from the cover of his straw mattress (this isnt the first time a zanni named by their costume, Arlecchino, Burattino is a great example here, but i believed his name is about "mocking" more).

His information is pretty hard to find, like Pierrot eat this guy and people never saw him again lol XDDD but seriously, most of the information lead me to the opera, not the zanni himself. There is only 2 sause from 2 Italy facebook account talk about him, the information is the same: Pagliaccio is Bertoldino from Vita di Bertoldo e di suo figlio Bertoldino, i did make a check but seem like there's still many confusion things about him, specially when we talk about his France side: a whole diffirent story and character trait @@ All i can say is this guy is a stupid clown (something a punching bag himself lol), not sad, just stupid and have some romantic incidents with familier look with Pierrot and could be the one inspired for Pierrot later.

Commedia dell'arte is really huge and most of zanni's informations are lost, so all of the things i found today might not completely full. But take this as a new thing to learn and give them some theories to keep those poor forgotten zanni some attention wouldnt ya? :3 Also is a great material for our imagination to build more commedia dell'arte OCs/AUs too heeheheheheh >:333
