Pam's abusive. Nobody storms in on their fully grown daughter hanging out with a friend and yells at them to get out unless they're an abuser. If she's so "embarrassed" about the trailer being dirty, she can clean it herself instead of leaving it to Penny and yelling at her when she gets help with it.
I don’t believe Shane is/was a violent drunk. Yeah sure he can get a little aggressive sometimes, but never to the point where it’s dangerous. Pam on the other hand, almost definitely is. At least verbally. Penny my dear, I’m so sorry.
I’m really not a fan of the Farmer being able to build a new house for Pam. She quite frankly doesn’t deserve it. She’s an abusive mother who take her substance abuse issues out on her daughter, and forces her to do all the housework and pick her up from the Stardrop Saloon on nights where she over drinks (aka almost every night). If it weren’t that, it’s the callous, casual threatening that the Farmer had better treat Penny right because she’s “all she has.” Well, she sure doesn’t act like it!
Until she can manage her finances, her alcoholism, her anger issues, and her poor treatment of her daughter, Pam should sit and rot in her triple-wide trailer (remind me again what was so wrong about her old, spacious home?). That’s still a kinder fate than what she deserves, but at least it’s not an entire piece of real estate property that comes out of the Farmer’s time, money, and resources.
Bottom line: Kindness has its limits, and you shouldn’t cast pearls amongst swine. Especially when that swine can’t hold its own liquor.
Just read the "people who hate Penny don't understand her or care about how fucked up her life actually is" confession and I want to add:
People criticize her for being "too traditional" and getting mad if you don't want kids, but maybe the reason having a family is so important to her is that she never had one and dreams of being a good mom in contrast to Pam
And I feel people find her boring because she's not depressed in a self-destructive or "bad girl" way, but in a more common one, where you have to swallow up and be responsible because you have people who depend on you, leaving you cheerless and tired all the time
This is not to say people should like her or anything, just an observation. I think SDV characters bring up so much debate and analysis because they're very well written
Comic anon yet again you are still not free of me.
General HCs for the town!
I HC the town as being in some 1990s-2000s setting. Everyone has landlines, no cell phones, computers are rare, and are pretty chunky. Explains a bit why nobody takes Sebastian's work seriously. The internet itself wasn't a 'viable' way to get hired.
Pam's husband left her for another woman. As a result she has a serious misogynistic streak because she aims her ire at other woman as opposed to the man who actually cheated. She hates him, ofc. But she's far more comfortable blaming another woman.
Kent, Jodi and Sam move to the valley with Jodi while she's pregnant with Vince because of the war + they're tired of how taxing city life is. Kent signs up because of the bonus offered. (Sam is 14)
The skateboard Sam constantly uses was a gift from his dad after he returned from his first deployment. He asked a sales associate what kind of things teenage boys like now, and thus. Sam receives his skateboard.
He was expecting more time at home once Vincent was born, but he was called back out sooner than he was hoping. This became a pattern due to the conflict.
Kent became a POW as was kept for around 6 years after his last return home. Jodi wasn't sure he'd come back or if he was even alive. Year 2 in my save is year 6 of his imprisonment. (based on some of his dialogue.) He's rescued in mid-spring, and sent home permanently with various medals and a hefty pension.
Vince has foggy memories of his dad, but all of them are positive. This leads to him asking after his dad a lot.
I HC Jas as being 6 or 7, and Vince being around 8.
Caroline and Pierre took a break (not publicized) and that is when she conceived Abigail. It's why Pierre just kind of looks the other way, since he was the one who insisted on the break, due to thinking he could potentially do better after a pretty bad argument early on in their marriage.
Caroline and Pierre came to the valley a few years before Abigail was born. They fought about whether they should home-school her or not. They initially opted to, but upon realizing how much work it was, sent her to public school from third grade onwards.
Robin met Demetrius through a seminar about various new uses for wood. Demetrius was there for science purposes, and Robin was there for art purposes. They hit it off fairly well and had a one night stand, that turned into Robin staying there for an entire week. (Sebastian was with his maternal grandparents.)
Clint's entire family was blacksmiths. His mom left his father when he was in his teens and he never understood why.
Willy has three nieces who are all have sea-themed names. His siblings live far far away, but usually send mail on holidays and call when they can.
continuation below the cut:
Clint's family used to provide swords, shields and other various necessities to the adventurers guild. Clint didn't pass the certification to supply them, so now he mostly supplies raw metal and various things to people in town like Leah and Robin, or sells them with the help of Mayor Lewis. He retakes the certification every 3 years.
Sandy and Emily met because Emily snuck off to a party in the calico desert in HS. She was grounded for a month but it was worth it.
Gil has several grandchildren from his time as an adventurer that he's never even met.
Evelyn and George met when they were in their 20s. He was a pretty rebellious young man, and she was wooed by how stern and serious and protective he was.
Lewis had a thing for Evelyn AND the Farmer's grandma at one point, but both ended up with other people and he never quite got over either of them.
They had Alex's mom when they were in their 30s, and they doted on her a LOT. She was a very floaty and kind of airheaded lady. But incredibly kind.
Linus' family are all extremely wealthy, and downright terrible people. It's why he's embraced the wild-man thing so much. He's seen what capitalism and wealth did to his family and wanted no part of it. The only person who knows this is Lewis and that's part of why he's not kind to Linus.
Gus inherited the bar from his mentor. He used to be the bartender of the saloon, and only inherited it fully about 5-6 years before the farmer shows up. His boss retired, and now he owns the saloon.
Gus was friends with the farmer's grandparents, Evelyn and George, and Lewis.
Marine is 34, and Lewis is 68. Marlon is actually 50, he just looks due to his lifestyle as an adventurer.
Marnie is a case of Shane's grandma having a surprise baby when she was in her 40s! It's why there's a smaller age gap between them.
Everyone else sucks and I give Kent the only pass cause he knows his issues and is trying but ptsd from war is no joke. That said I can’t give Shane the same pass cause he doesn’t bring Jas with him when he moves and leaves her in the back room behind the lit fireplace surrounded by hay in marines house. Demetrius is a helicopter parent with maru Robin is a helicopter parent with Sebastian (neither one of them will decide to do right by their fave kid by chilling out so the sibling rivalry can end) Pam… is Pam. Caroline blames Pierre but she’s the one constantly harping on Abby even complaining to a stranger about her daughters hair color and how strange she is. Pierre needs therapy his obsession with money seems fear based and it keeps him from being present more with Caroline and Abby, Jodi wtf is wrong with that woman. Perpetual victim. She wants her kids to stay young and innocent and she won’t even let them clean but freaks out over a spilled egg and then gets really weird during one of sams heart scenes that makes it sound like she busted in on him having private time and he’s supposed to be in his early 20’s like this is giving “boy mom” and I know people say oh it’s cause she didn’t want Kent to miss them growing up that’s so much worse actually, like legitimately its abuse to stunt your children’s growth for any reason. Haley and Emily’s parents are just gone. Marnie again fire safety but also her obsession with staring at the microwave. George and Evelyn homophobic and such a sweet old lady but should not be raising kids with this angry homophobic man. This is why Alex is the way he is.
And the wizard…. I mean just all of that doesn’t matter if his kid is Abby or Jas he’s terrible
I think that Penny would be staunchly pro-choice. Pam is a single mother and an alcoholic... as sad as it sounds, Penny has probably wished that she was aborted at some point.
