The Sex Talk- A Millennial Story

The "sex talk" needs an overhaul. How do you talk to your kids about sex? When I was 14 years old my father sat me down before my boyfriends birthday and told me two things~ 1) All boys want is sex. And 2) Do not have sex until you are married if you value yourself. Now this talk really messed me up, then and today. I felt as though there was no possibility for love and was heavily under the impression the true love didn't, couldn't, exist. How could it if sex is always the only motivating factor for pursuing a partner? He was angry, took me aside on our way to the party and spent less time talking to me about sex and relationships then it took to write this down. I am attracted to personality and not a particular sex. I finally came out to my mother after years of her recoiling at same sex couples on tv. I was terrified. I had tried in so many ways to explain to her that it's okay for same sex couples to exist to no avail. Finally I couldn't let her continue to be so insulting. I told her about my sexuality. I don't have kids but here is how I will talk to them about sex. 1) Sex is something special and is meant to be an expression of love; be careful of people's intentions as not everyone treats sex as a privilege. It's a treasure not to be wasted. Wait until you are ready. 2) I am always here to talk with you, no matter how awkward. I will not judge and I will talk to you like the adult you are becoming. I was once struggling too. I love you. Nothing will ever change that. 3) Sexuality comes in many forms, and it is perfectly normal and beautiful to love another human being. There are many different types of sexuality that you can be born with: straight, gay, bi-sexual, transgender and many more. All sexual orientations are more then accepted by us. We love you and accept you for who you are. 4) Safe sex vs unsafe sex; Preaching abstinence has done nothing for my generation. I have put myself out in the open in the hope that others will benefit from my message. Know there IS hope, know there IS love, and above all else know there is nothing wrong with loving another Person.
