Colt stared down at the stuffed animal in the palm of his hand, nursing it like it was the most valuable thing in the world. Mr. Bunsen had seen better days, of course. A few stitches here and there were enough to add character, but over the years the poor rabbit had enough stitches, with his fur mangled and colour faded, to make it look like he’d been strung together with the remains of other dolls.
He didn’t turn away from the animal to address Felix. “‘Used to fit just like this once, you did. When you were born, your momma thought I’d crush yah. Wouldn’t let me hold yah less she could keep a hand pulling my fingers back.”
Felix didn’t respond. He refused to cross the distance and sit down beside his father, but he also refused to take the cowards way out and leave the room. So he stayed, deciding to endure, but not engage.
“Felix,” Colt said, sounding like he was croaking through every letter. “There’s a lot of things that I… that I need to tell you. Conversations we should have had years ago. Come and-”
He stopped himself. It was hard for Felix to hear his father sound so unsure about his own wording, mulling over the request.
“You should- This would-” Colt’s free hand tightened into a fist, and Felix knew he was resisting the urge to hit something to deal with the frustration of his floundering. “I would… I would really appreciate the two of us having a sit down. If… if that’s okay with you.”
