182 centimeters of classics

“I commute by train between Antwerp and Brussels every day. I take the train at half past nine in the morning to arrive here before eleven. I leave at around nine in the evening.  You must really be very fond of books to do that,” says Steven. He has always liked reading books. It is one of the nicest things he can imagine himself doing. Steven finds himself fortunate that he can do something that he really enjoys. He does not actually long for weekends or holidays.

Passa Porta is a large bookstore mainly selling books in four languages . According to him, it is very important for a book seller to get involved in the local community. There is a secondary school just around the corner of the bookstore. The teachers very often come here just browsing books. Here, they also  decide which books  to put on the reading list next year. Once the pupils come to your store for their compulsory reading, you notice that they find back their way for personal books, too.

Over the past few months the decline of the small independent book store has been in the news quite often. However Passa Porta is doing better and better. That has also to do with better local community work and its visibility on social media like Facebook.

Passa Porta promotes what it likes best. No ‘best sellers’ here.

“Is there any interesting incident that happened in this store?” Steven answers: “Well, there is a story. There was a lady who wanted to buy a lot of books for her son’s 18th birthday present so that he will remember throughout his life. She came up with the idea of buying a stack of literature classics  that matched his exact height. He is 182 cm tall. So we brought as many classics as possible until we reached the height of 182 cm. The lady bought all of them.”

«Je fais le trajet en train d’Anvers à Bruxelles tous les jours. Je prends le train à 9h30 pour arriver ici avant 11h00. Je pars vers 21h00. Il faut vraiment être accro aux livres pour faire ça», lance Steven. Il a toujours aimé lire. C’est une des plus belles choses qu’il puisse s’imaginer faire. Steven trouve qu’il a de la chance de pouvoir faire quelque chose qu’il aime vraiment. Il faut dire qu’il ne court pas vraiment après les week-ends ou les vacances.

Passa Porta est une grande librairie qui vend principalement des ouvrages dans quatre langues. Selon lui, il est très important qu’un libraire s’implique dans la communauté locale. Il y a une école secondaire juste à côté de la boutique. Les enseignants viennent souvent juste pour feuilleter les livres. Ici, ils peuvent aussi décider quels ouvrages ils vont placer sur la liste des livres à étudier l’année suivante. Une fois que les élèves viennent au magasin pour leurs lectures obligatoires, vous remarquez qu’ils reviennent aussi pour leurs lectures personnelles.

Ces derniers mois, le déclin des petites librairies indépendantes a souvent fait l’actualité. Passa Porta, de son côté, va pourtant de mieux en mieux. Un succès à attribuer entre autres à une meilleure collaboration avec la communauté locale et à sa visibilité dans les médias sociaux comme Facebook. 

Passa Porta promeut ses coups de cœur. Pas de «best-sellers» ici. «Avez-vous déjà vécu des situations insolites dans le magasin?» Steven me répond: «Voyons… Oui, il y a bien une anecdote à raconter. Il y a eu cette dame qui voulait offrir beaucoup de livres à son fils pour son 18e anniversaire, histoire qu’il s’en souvienne toute sa vie. Elle a alors eu l’idée d’acheter une pile de classiques de la littérature correspondant à sa taille exacte. Son fils fait 1,82 m. Résultat: nous avons empilé autant de classiques que possible jusqu’à atteindre la hauteur de 182 centimètres. Et la dame a tout acheté!»

Steven Van Ammel werkt al drieëneenhalf jaar voor Passa Porta, maar de winkel zelf bestaat al bijna acht jaar. Het is een grote boekhandel waar voornamelijk boeken in vier talen worden verkocht. Dit is zijn eerste baan in Brussel. 

‘‘Ik pendel elke dag met de trein tussen Antwerpen en Brussel. Ik neem de trein om halftien ‘s morgens om hier vóór elf uur toe te komen. Rond negen uur ‘s avonds vertrek ik. Je moet echt wel van boeken houden om dit te doen’’, zegt Steven. Hij heeft altijd graag boeken gelezen. Het is een van de plezierigste dingen die hij zich kan inbeelden. Steven vindt dat hij geluk heeft dat hij een baan heeft waar hij echt van geniet. Verlangen naar weekends of vakanties doet hij niet echt. 

Volgens Steven is het voor een boekenverkoper heel belangrijk om betrokken te zijn bij de lokale gemeenschap. Er is een middelbare school net om de hoek van de boekhandel. De leraars komen hier vaak in de boeken bladeren. Hier beslissen ze ook welke boeken er op de boekenlijst van het volgende schooljaar zullen staan. “Zodra de leerlingen naar je winkel komen voor hun verplichte lectuur, merk je dat ze de weg terugvinden voor hun persoonlijke boeken.”

De laatste maanden is de neergang van de kleine onafhankelijke boekhandel vaak in het nieuws geweest. Nochtans doet Passa Porta het steeds beter. Dat heeft ook te maken met de aanwezigheid in de lokale gemeenschap en de zichtbaarheid op sociale media zoals Facebook. 

Passa Porta promoot waar het zelf het meest van houdt. Hier vind je geen ‘best sellers’.  Is er in deze winkel ooit iets speciaals gebeurd? Steven antwoordt: ‘‘Er is wel een verhaal. Op een dag kwam hier een dame die een hoop boeken wilde kopen voor de achttiende verjaardag van haar zoon. Het geschenk moest hem zijn hele leven bijblijven. Ze had het idee om een stapel literatuurklassiekers te kopen die even hoog was als zijn lengte: 182 cm. We haalden dus zoveel mogelijk klassiekers aan tot we de hoogte van 182 cm bereikten.  De dame kocht ze allemaal!’’

Thursday 16th May 2013 - Listen to their voice

It’s litterature night in different European cities, including Brussels!

  Writers are invited to read out loud their texts in different litterature places in the center of Brussels. You can walk from a place to another to discover new writers and texts. The readings are in French and in Dutch.

  If you don’t know any of those two languages: why you should go? Well, to hear them without having the pressure of understanding them like you might face during a conversation. Litterature is an art, so you can enjoy the voice, you can feel the words even if you don’t get the meaning.

Another good reason to attend the event is because it will give you a good overview to nice places:

  The Wolf is a litterature center for kids, where they be introduce to litterature trought different activities and thanks to workshops in the two offical languages.

  La Bellone is one of the most beautiful hidden gem in Brussels...  A must see in the heart of rue de Flandres, which is one of my favourite street in the center with all the shops, bars, restaurants and galleries.

  The Musée des Lettres et des manuscrits is the newest museum in Brussels who opened in one of the oldest european covered shopping gallery. In the same gallery there’s the other tonight’s spot the beautiful bookshop Tropismes, who benefit from the same type of architecture than the rest of the gallery.

  Other nice spots during this litterature night is the International House of Litterature Passa Porta. The name is very well found, as the place is a passeport to discover litterature in different languages, with conferences that can be held in German, Italian or English!

  There’s also the library Riches Claires which is not only the local library of the neighborhood but is also a central library in Brussels from which I like the many books about the city!

  Le Cercle des Voyageurs is a beautiful café restaurant next to Manneken Pis, one of this room is a library, old style and very cosy...
