The Desert Prince by Peter V. Brett Fifteen years have passed since the war with demons; now the children of humanity's heroes struggle to find their own path. Princess Olive has her entire life planned out by her mother, a steady march on a checklist to prepare her for succession. Meanwhile, Darin is free to choose his own path, but the legacy of greatness hangs heavy on the shoulders of a boy who has only ever been great at hiding. But when Olive and Darin step across the wards one night, they learn the demons are not all gone, and those that remain hunger for revenge ...
On December 5, 1974, the last Episode of Monty Python's Flying Circus aired. ("Party Political Broadcast" Monty Python's Flying Circus, TV)
I finished The Demon King, the last book in Peter V. Brett's Nightfall Trilogy/Demon Cycle series. I liked it more than I didn't but, like when I finished the original series, I have some distinctly unresolved feelings about it and not much of a community around these books to turn to.
It's a cool world, and I like the expansion this second trilogy adds in exploring the children of the heroes in series one. And the depiction of significant anxiety disorders as well as Olive as an intersex character is good BUT I'm not sure it totally lands, especially when finding the "Joined" across the sea.
I don't wanna fall into the trap of "underrepresented character types must be perfect" especially as intersex conditions in fantasy don't show up a ton, and I did resonate with Olive often, though I am trans masculine not intersex.
Also, not following through on the clear V that was Rojvah, Darrin, and Arrick and instead implying that Darrin would include Cilene and Damon in his future but not mentioning Arrick hardly at all in this final book was upsetting to me. Maybe Brett didn't wanna end with sixteen year old Darrin and a whole stable of future spouses, though I don't see why not!
