Hi!! I’ve been quietly following your blog for a while now (yes yes yes I know that’s stalker-y I’m very sorry) and honestly? I am in love with your sense of humour and DEFINITELY DEFINITELY your inking style!! I’m just getting into inking myself and I’d like to ask for some tips.

Gah sorry for such a laaate late reply! But it makes me super happy that you like my inking style!! Sometimes, I feel like I tend to lay the ink on too thick…I like using a lot of black because I really admire Mike Mignola and Tim Sale. And that’s actually part of my main advice: ink like your idols and you’ll end up with something that’s your own because you’ll figure out what techniques of theirs work for you and what doesn’t. There are some basic tips though; I’ll use this Jason I did a while ago:

Basically, you want to ink with a heavier line where the shadow is and a lighter one where the light hits. Some people like to have a heavy outline and then lighter lines inside which looks good, too, but I personally tend to stick with this method because that’s just me.

And then you just build up your shadows. Don’t be afraid to use a lot of black! As long as the black has a purpose and you’re not putting it there to hide mistakes or using it to be lazy, you can make a good, balanced image. If you have trouble seeing where shadows hit, I’ve found that squinting helps (I dunno if that’ll work for you, but it’s a worth a try right?). I like to block in my main shadows first. And then…..

Add your detail! And that’s how I do my inking. There are a lot of methods out there, though, so try everything!
