10 unusual language learning tips !
i see a lot of the same (sometimes unhelpful) tips being thrown around, so here’s my two cents:
1. write shopping lists/to do lists in your target language - often you don’t learn this vocab but it’s conversational & v useful! also writing yourself notes (lil pep talks on the bathroom mirror, for example) can work.
2. buy a small whiteboard and practice verb conjugation (esp. romantic languages) or script writing
3. talk to pets in target language if possible!
4. look for quotes in your target language - often the turns of phrase are more colloquial, and is a good opportunity to see how things are translated from your native language
5. find a fairly easy news headline (in target lang) and try to re-write it w/ vocab you already have. you’ll quickly find gaps - this is a good thing! (if you’re feeling extra spicy, try writing a small subheading or description about the article).
6. create an imaginary friend who you speak with on the shower, or on the train, doing the laundry etc. talk w/ them in your target lang (in your head, obvs) about your day, future plans, etc etc.
~for more advanced learners~
7. when you’re more advanced, and have some grasp of past/future tenses, buy a children’s/tween’s/YA book that you’ve already read. highlight and annotate the shit out of it. you’ll know the general gist already, which makes context clues easier to find.
8. change wikipedia settings into target language - same goes for any social media site. this can be a mega challenge, but is so good for vocab, plus you’re more likely to remember the info since you worked so hard for it.
9. write a review for a book/film/record/whatever you’ve most recently consumed. maybe start a diary of them, or just have an ongoing word doc.
10. find a bilingual edition of poetry/literature if possible. you might find you can spot translation differences, but you’re sure to find some new vocab.
In Portugal, the mythical Rooster of Barcelos (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rooster_of_Barcelos) is often portrayed as a black rooster with a whimsical pattern of colourful dots, flowers and hearts. One of my best friends recently had both a birthday AND she graduated as a para-legal (so proud of her!!) so I decided to do my own version of the traditional goodluck figure :D Plus has that nice tie-in to the world of law, from the rooster's story. This rooster is surrounded by cork oak which is native to Portugal, whose bark is used to make wine corks, and Portugal is famous for their wine as well, hence the wooden barrel of port and the grapes in the background :D Thanks to DeSerres for doing a lovely job adding an accent matting to the framing :D
I have been told the grapes are the best part XD
Galito Restaurant, Pawtucket RI.
Paella- Traditional Spanish rice dish with seafood and meats.
Rhode Island is best known for their beaches, Del’s Lemonade and of course amazing seafood. Rhode Island is a foodie state, that has some of the best restaurants I have ever dined at. Obviously having an amazing culinary school, like Johnson and Wales University, makes it easy to see why there are so many amazing restaurants to try in this tiny state. Before living in RI I have not had too much exposure to Portuguese cuisine, but with a big Portuguese population I am learning more and more about their traditions, customs and food. With a lot of meat and seafood in the cuisine I knew I would enjoy any dish.
Pawtucket is the city located next to Providence. The Pawtucket region was said to have been one of the most populous places in New England prior to the arrival of European settlers. In this area Pawtucket is best known for the Pawtucket Red Sox, the AAA Minor League team of the Boston Red Sox. It is also home to Slater Park, which is a beautiful park that was names after Samuel Slater, the American industrialist who contrasted America’s first water powered textile mill in Pawtucket. When I was in grade school we had a field trip to Slater Mills and learned the history of the mill and Slater’s family.
Galito Restaurant is located in Pawtucket and is known for their Portuguese- American Cuisine. I have never tried Portuguese Paella before but I love Paella and I like to try it at every restaurant that offers the dish. The first thing I noticed was the full lobster that came in my Paella, I already was impressed. The fact it was a lazy lobster when I flipped it over made me even more happy! I got to eat a whole lobster with my meal and I didn’t have to crack the shells and work for it!! YES!!! When it comes to paella I can be a little picky, sometimes it can be too salty. Sometimes the meat are too salt compared to the rice and seafood. That was not the case with the Galito Paella, which was the best paella I have ever had. The dish had Spanish rice, sausage, lobster, squid, scallops and clams. This dish is a seafood lover’s dream come true!! I would go back to Galito and have their Paella again but maybe this time I would split it with someone….or maybe not!!
Based on presentation and taste of the Galito Restaurant Paella, I would rate this dish a 10 out of 10.
quentes.
me visto das mais quentes peças,
dos lenços,
me rastejo pelos cobertores peludos,
e, mesmo assim, os pés passam a queimar.
pisa em brasa fresca,
se resfresca
da mais ardente
e ardilosa
decepção de não conseguir
jamais
se aterrar em solo fresco,
sem querer usar os calcanhares para,
de cara,
logo,
correr.

It was your birthday, and you could not be more disappointed. After everyone found out that you were dating Neville, it was weird for a short time. People talked about you behind your back, but also in the front of you. In the end, you did not care. The only thing that made you sad was that your best friend stopped talking to you. Y/F/N was not only mad but furious. It was not about you dating a Gryffindor, but you not telling your her/him. There had never been secrets between the two of you. You tried to see everything positive, but it did not change anything. You just wanted to eat cake with Y/F/N and Neville.
