An Introduction to Feeding The Eye

The title for this virtual landscape, Feeding The Eye, emerged from Anne Hollander’s collection of essays produced in 1999. The publication elaborates from a ‘complex viewpoint’ the immaculate exploration in visual images where the author emphasizes, “to get the whole point of an image, we can’t rightly “read” it unless we can really see it.”[1] In other words, when we see an image or painting, it is crucial to diverge from the “immediate cultural message” and embrace its visual form, for it too has meaning to communicate.

Hollander, a historian that specialized in interpreting clothing through art and perceptions of the body, was able to extricate a greater understanding when it came to the image. The essays dissect representations not in its literal form but its conception. From modern legends to modern dress, the author is able to separate its alluring facade, and investigate what makes the image so magnetically resonating. Such a study analyzes the art of dress in relation to particular icons of its time and ultimately, suggests the power of images. The appetite to recognize the ephemeral harmony in the quality, depiction and meaning amongst what lies beyond the lens is a similar craving I carry.

With a keen sensibility to unveil the cultural development amongst the representations that stand before me, my literature seeks to reveal these complex yet fascinating findings, and contribute to readers’ experience in assimilating the beauty of this creative world that surrounds us.
