(angst / jealousy / second chance / pre-timeskip)
│ you can fall out of love a hundred times, but it still finds a way back to the same person.

you’ve known kuroo and kenma since you were kids — three houses on the same block, one trio that never broke apart.
your days always looked the same: kenma’s quiet voice narrating whatever game he was playing, you making sure he ate something, and kuroo hovering somewhere nearby, talking too loud, teasing too much, pretending he wasn’t watching you every time you laughed.
you used to think you’d never have to say the words i like you out loud — that he already knew.
but one late summer afternoon, after practice, sweaty and grinning, you said it anyway.
“i like you, kuroo.”
he blinked, still mid-laugh, and then said, “yeah sure.”
and that was that.
it wasn’t some dramatic confession — it was simple, casual, so him — but your heart still exploded in your chest. and somehow, that was how it started.
the two of you dating felt natural. easy. there was always something to laugh about, some excuse for him to pull you close, some new way for him to make you blush. he was your best friend and your first love rolled into one, and you thought it would last forever.
you didn’t see the end coming.
the fight wasn’t even about anything big. it never is.
it was over a tournament schedule, of all things — you were stressed about keeping the team organized, he was stressed about playing well, and one sarcastic comment too many turned into a full-blown argument that neither of you were mature enough to stop.
you remember the sting of his words — “you don’t get it, you’re not out there playing,” — and the sharpness of your own reply — “yeah? well, at least I take it seriously.”
the silence after that was deafening.
you didn’t talk for a week. then two. then it just… stuck.
you still saw each other, of course. it was impossible not to. same friends, same classrooms, same volleyball gym.
you were nekoma’s manager. he was the captain.
and that was the worst part — that no matter how much you wanted to stay mad, he was still him. the loud laugh that carried across the court, the messy hair sticking out in every direction, the way his smile made everyone else relax.
you used to love all of it.
now, every little thing he did felt like sandpaper against your heart.
the teasing, the smugness, the stupid flirting with every girl who smiled at him — you told yourself it didn’t bother you, but every time he winked at someone else, you wanted to scream.
and it wasn’t just you.
he wasn’t immune either.
when you laughed a little too hard at someone’s joke, he’d throw a ball a little too hard in practice. when you brushed past him, he’d mutter something sarcastic under his breath. when you ignored him, he’d go out of his way to make sure everyone else noticed him instead.
it was exhausting.
it was heartbreak in slow motion.
the breaking point came one evening after practice.
you were packing up the ball cart when you overheard two girls giggling near the door, whispering about how kuroo had promised to walk them to the station.
you rolled your eyes, muttering something under your breath — not quietly enough.
“something to say, manager?”
his voice came from behind you, teasing, but the edge in it was sharp.
“nope,” you said, shoving a ball into the bag.
“sure? sounded like it.”
you turned, glaring. “you’re really gonna stand here and fish for attention from me when you’ve got two girls waiting for you?”
he smirked, but his eyes flickered. “jealous?”
you laughed bitterly. “of what? your ego?”
the room went quiet. kenma, wisely, slipped out the side door.
for a second, it was just the two of you, the tension so thick you could barely breathe.
“why do you even care what i do?” he asked, softer now.
you swallowed hard. “because i used to.”
the words cracked in the air, brittle and honest. you slung the bag over your shoulder and walked past him before you could regret it.
he found you later that night on the school rooftop, knees tucked to your chest, pretending not to cry.
“you always come up here when you need air,” he said quietly, stepping closer.
“you shouldn’t know that anymore.”
“i still do.”
you looked up at him, eyes red, throat tight. “you have a whole fan club now. shouldn’t you be busy with that?”
he sighed, sitting down beside you. “none of them are you.”
you stared at him, the words sinking deep.
“you drive me insane,” he said, voice low and rough. “i can’t stand the way you ignore me. the way you act like i don’t exist. i hate it.”
“good,” you snapped. “now we’re even.”
“you think i don’t miss you?” he said, louder now. “you think i don’t notice the way you still look at me? you think i forgot what your voice sounds like when you laugh?”
you turned away, trying to breathe.
“you make me crazy,” he whispered. “you always have.”
“you’re such an idiot,” you muttered, choking on a laugh that hurt.
“yeah,” he said, smiling. “your idiot.”
he reached for your hand, hesitating just long enough for you to pull away — but you didn’t.
you didn’t because you were tired of pretending. tired of missing him in silence. tired of fighting a war you didn’t want to win.
so when his fingers laced with yours, you let them.
“kuroo…”
“i’m sorry,” he said. “for everything. i didn’t mean what i said back then. i just—i was an idiot who thought i had all the time in the world with you.”
you finally looked at him, and the look on his face was everything you’d been waiting to see again.
“you still drive me insane,” you whispered.
he laughed, relief softening every line of his face. “good. i missed that.”
and when he leaned in, forehead pressed against yours, it felt less like a beginning and more like coming home.
Atsumu felt a sneeze coming on, but he willed it down, praying that it'd go away on its own. The itch in his nose got worse and he felt his eyes close and before he could try to tamper it down again, the sneeze tore through him loud enough to garner the attention of the rest of the team. Fuck.
"Atsumu, did you catch a cold?" Ginjima asked the one question he was hoping to avoid during practice, and he knew he was fucked. That wasn't going to stop him from trying to talk his way out of it, though.
"This is nothin'! I'll get worse if I don't play volleyball!"
Ginjima stood up, a look of steely resolution in his eyes. "That's the spirit! Love of volleyball conquers all!" Atsumu stared determinedly ahead of him, still feeling a little dizzy from the sneeze. He was about to agree with Ginjima when he felt a familiar, cold presence behind him.
"Go home."
or, atsumu is sick and misses his boyfriend, and is a massive crybaby about it
