Here’s a tiny little snippet, just the first few paragraphs, of the Pacific Rim Halloween fic I’m posting in October!!! It’ll be dark but probably not dark!fic dark. There will be a lighthouse, and Precursors, and there will almost certainly be a murder. No happy endings here, people.

Working title: Where the Ocean Meets the October Country

Some time ago, in the days of your grandmother’s grandmother, there lived two men of great intelligence and extraordinary technical ability. Their names were Dr. Gottlieb and Dr. Geiszler.

Now, Dr. Gottlieb was a man of science, with a particular interest in the theoretical and the intangible. Dr. Geiszler was a doctor, and his- yes, of the kind that performs surgeries- and his experimental procedures were much in demand. Dr. Gottlieb lived uptown, Dr. Geiszler lived downtown, and though they had never met one another face to face, they were the dearest of friends. Then came the war.

The war came, and the war went, and when it went, it left Dr. Gottlieb without the convenient use of his left leg, and Dr. Geiszler with a terrible tremor in both hands. He was unable to hold a scalpel, or indeed, to hold much of anything, without a strong dose of laudanum to steady his nerves.

After a long chain of letters, they made a plan to end their misery. Each of them had personal projects there were attending to- projects that were going nowhere in the city, with all its bustle and noise- and a desire to meet the other in person. So they arranged a holiday, one that would allow them to work closely with one another, far from the city lights.

This holiday would take them through the end of summer and into late autumn. All that remained was for them to find someone who would be willing to take them on as boarders.
