At long last, I can finally add Welcome Committee Frankie to my collection😭I honestly feared we’d never see this doll release: so glad I’ve been proven wrong! They’re such an important step forward, regardless of how many people are trying to push back. Dolls like this are needed now more than ever: perhaps we can’t celebrate them on shelves or with a fashion pack set like initially designed, but this Frankie is still here, still loud and proud. That by itself is a win.
I wonder if with Frankie being trans in G3 if we'll get a pride doll or set, either of them or just in general.
I doubt it tbh because it just doesn't really seem like it would happen, it could but I'm doubtful. It would be awesome though! Yes, yes it's very corporate of them but what isn't really?
This is what Mattel Barbie Extra #1 should have looked like. I gave her a partial repaint and redressed her in her default jacket, dress from Mattel Barbie Fashionista 90, and socks and shoes from MGA Rainbow High Sunny Madison. I also gave her double-jointed arms, better hands, and action figure ankle cups/feet so she can stand on her own. Meet Ebru. She’s here, and she’s queer, so stick it in your ear!
Hey everyone! I forgot to share my dolls with you from June, so I’d like to do so now before I forget again. This is Azalea, my mermaid doll for Pride Month. I don’t talk about it too often, but I identify as asexual and bi-romantic. I’m not usually someone who explores these kinds of themes in art, but I wanted to take some time to work through a little personal exploration, and as a result, we have a mermaid that takes from the ace flag’s palette with a hint of pink from the bi flag. Under the cut are some more photos of her and some notes about her process.
Azalea puts a lot of interesting ideas together. For starters, she’s made from one of my favorite Monster High characters, Sirena Von Boo. I love all the dolls from the Freaky Fusions line, but of course my heart melts for the mermaid ghost. Sirena matched my color scheme as she was, but I did a little tweaking to get her where I wanted her to be. Because Azalea is a mermaid, I wanted to have a ‘found object’ look to her. My grandma recently sent us a care package, and part of it was filled with broken jewelry, which I graciously used for this project in combination with beads and elastic. Because I was working on another doll at the time (who you’ll see very soon~), I reused some of my scrap fabric from his project, along with some cut up ribbon and glue, to make her top. It’s actually attached to her chest with a little bit of sticky tack so that I can remove and adjust if need be.
I’m sure you’ve also noticed those cute little turtles. Azalea loves turtles, so I made her some out of resin! That’s right, I’ve been experimenting with two part epoxy resin for the past month, and it has been a blast! To start, I used some silicone candy molds, which is what these and her starfish hair accessory are, but I’m slowly working to sculpt my own molds. With time, I want to be able to make prosthetic limbs out of resin that would be so cool!
It was also my first time curling yarn hair. When I made my wefts, before I put them on her head, I took a wooden paintbrush handle and wrapped the hair around it, then pressed it with a low heat setting on my flat iron. it was a bit tricky, but I love how it came out, and that ombre is just so stunning. I also am so glad I had steady handiwork with her face. Because the weather has been so hot, my sealant has been struggling, so I had to bust out the acrylic paints. I forget how good black looks with its coverage on the lips, almost makes me want to touch up Allison with some.
Overall, Azalea is one of the prettiest dolls I’ve made to date, and she was surprisingly simple. I had a hard time with her concept, but the end result is gorgeous, so I have no complaints. Next time I share a doll, it’s gonna be a familiar face for most of you, and I’m so psyched to share him! You’re gonna love him! Until then, here’s wishing all of you a wonderful day!
My pride doll Callisto! I wasn't actually going to make a doll because i didnt think I had the time but when i got back from my trip I worked on her for four days and finished her quick! Happy Pride month to all my fellow queer artists!
I still can’t believe they actually made it into production and were featured in that electrifying music video! I hope we see more of this model in future animations and maybe more visibly Queer Frankie dolls in the future??👀
