#PrideBookstagram Day 26: Sink! by Krayonela • I’m so angry at this! How dare Krayonela take my heart like that and tear it to pieces!?!? But okay, I love it actually. 🤗 I didn’t even know silent comics were a thing and this was super brilliant! I love the artistry, not only the drawings and style but also in the paneling, pacing and how the plot was driven without narration and dialogue. 💙 It seems simple and I did finish it in just a couple of minutes but it’s so good! You should really go and get your hands on this, and then DM me when you read it so we can cry together, omg) • Oh, and about the ending (this is not a spoiler, I promise) i liked it. I mean, it’s not my usual flavor of HEA/HFN but it’s hopeful! #PrideBookstagram Day 19: The Rasa Cycles by Jonette Valenciano • Apologies for posting a little late today (it was a looong day, I’m telling you!) but I didn’t forget to post, so yay!! • Here’s a Filipino comic about a man who is practically ~lost (in life, in love, in most aspects of his life, really) meeting his new muse at a dive bar. The other guy turns out to be a literal muse and well, this might be a start of something wonderful for him. It wasn’t explicitly mentioned what the MC identifies as but Mike’s gotta be at least bi. • This is what i said about it in a review I posted last year: “The subtle storytelling through illustrations and dialogue is what I like about this the most. I will admit that the first few pages were a bit confusing as I couldn’t yet see where the story was going, what it would be about, etc., but by the middle, when the protagonist’s gaping character flaw is presented (and presented close to reality, if I may highlight) I couldn’t stop reading! Devoured this while waiting to board a plane and finished it right away. It was so good that I reread it two more times aboard and observed the pacing and how everything is told at just the right time. Paneling and some scenes may need improvement but I’m taking it, flaws and all. To put it simply, I want MOARR! #PrideBookstagram Day 25: Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 #414 “Fall Down Go Boom” and Uncanny X-Men #392 - Eve of Destruction Part 1. • Today’s feature is Marvel’s first major, openly gay character: Jean-Paul Babier, codename: Northstar. He first appeared around the 80’s but was only able to finally state “I am gay.” In 1992. He was then married to his husband, Kyle in 2012, in the first depiction of a gay wedding in mainstream comics. (Just imagine how many times the Wolverine x Jean Grey x Cyclops x Emma Frost cycle have been hashed and rehashed in the same time frame for the gays to develop a single relationship timeline. I’ll give you a minute. 🙄) • I haven’t followed Northstar’s Alpha Flight storyline (bec I only have the patience to follow and collect X-Men titles with characters I recognize on the cover) so I was quite pleasantly surprised to find these copies in 2005. Eve of Destruction was part one of a series and was like an intro to a new plot and the superhero team as a whole, but Fall Down Go Boom was more focused on Jean-Paul. In the rescue of young and psionically volatile Peter, Northstar connected to the kid bec they were both disowned by their families. Peter for being a mutant, and Jean-Paul for being mutant AND gay. • I was 16 then, and to find this representation of an openly gay superhero - on the side of the good guys - was both refreshing and gave me a sense of hope. I also love how directly homophobia and it’s effects were discussed in this issue’s story. I would’ve liked a less tragic ending (and a less petty and manipulative Charles X. #PrideBookstagram Day 23: Ang Kagila-gilalas na Pakikipagsapalaran ni Zsazsa Zaturnnah by Carlo Vergara • No list of Pinoy Pride🏳️‍🌈 literature is complete without Zsazsa Zaturnnah, and it’s embarassing to admit that I haven’t read this until this month. 😅 But I finally got to experience it and it was amazing! • Small town parlorista Ada stumbles upon a huge space rock that allows him to transform into the, strong, voluptuous, and formidable Zsazsa Zaturnnah. The newly minted superheroine’s abilities are soon put to the test when monsters, zombies, and extraterrestrial supermodels endanger his hometown. Cue hilarity, action and a couple of heart crushing scenes (that part with Ada’s zombie father is just, argh! 💔) • I don’t know why I took too long to read this but once I started, I couldn’t put it down! I loved the artwork, the underlying social themes and the witty and hilarious dialogue, mostly between Didi and Ada. And bec the romance reader in me is always on, I sailed the Ada x Dodong ship from the v first time the love interest is introduced. I was so happy with Ada’s characterization (the classic Pinay Taray as per the articles after the comics) and that this is a more dynamic and more realistic representation of the gay parlorista. A bunch of other things (serious social issues) happen and it’s handled with a dash of humor and heart warming sincerity. It’s been around for 15 years but we need more of these kinds of stories. #PrideBookstagram Day 8: Seek the Ox, Find Happiness (from Beyond Light and Darkness) by Me! 🤗 • I’m also making it #SelfPromoFriday so today’s feature is a a short story from me! It’s my first ever story to reach publication, written in 2015 and printed the year after. • Guillaume is following an anonymous lead to find his missing grandfather. He takes his bestfriend, Lia, to a quiet, suburban neighborhood and finds him, with a truth that has been hidden for a long time. • I’ve written this for our first Kabute anthology. The prompt was the Ox from the Chinese Zodiac, and Happiness. This is one of those stories that felt effortless to write. I just sat down and penned down ideas and the plot came to me easily. (That’s not always the way, I’ve now learned 😅) • The book isn’t available anywhere at this time, but the stories can be found on Wattpad. (Seek the Ox...can be found here https://my.w.tt/VHMS11ZvzN) The ones in the printed version have been edited but the Ones on WP are more or less the full stories already. • My story’s the only one with a queer theme (also the only one with 0 fantasy, hehe) but the rest of the stories are no less creative and beautiful. I don’t have anything against those books, i hear they’re quite lovely actually, but I haven’t read them yet and tbh, they’ve been promo’ed by everyone else at this point already. My recs might be a bit more on the “dated” shelves (like 90’s and 00’s) and those which might no longer be in bookstores rn (but are thankfully available from online sellers or as ebooks!). • So yeah. #PrideBookstagram2018 Day 1: Start Here, Short Stories of First Encounters. • Happy Pride Month!!! 🏳️‍🌈 Of course I’ll start off with #StartHere and of course I got carried away with the props (the book looks tiny next to the giant P!!! 😂 )Pride is as much a celebration as it is a demonstration so there, PARTYY! 🤣 • I feel like I’ve shared too much info on this book since it came out in January (just see my feed and blog posts AND tweets! Hah!) but I’ll have to say that what I love most about Start Here is the guarantee of a happy ever afters. We’ve had a lot of gay lit in the PH but we’re almost always oppressed in it and it’s almost always about fighting and losing and crying over ~spilled milk, that it gets exhausting after a while.
