The Princesses
The Princes
Sofia’s village friends + Oona
(I did the princes and my sister did the princesses. I also did Lucinda and Oona and my sister did Ruby and Jade)
@zazzyzane
I was going through my screenshots and art references, and I decided to make a list of all the Black characters with speaking roles from Sofia the First.
First row: Ruby Hanshaw, Princess Leena, Prince Khalid, Princess Maya, Queen Anya, and King Nasir of Khaldoun
Second row: Helen Hanshaw, King Oberlyn, Queen Tessa, and Princess Kari
Third row: Chrysta, Orion, Zinessa, and Plank
Fourth row: Sir Oliver, Sir Jaxon, Jane, and Carol of the Arrow
Monster Monarchs: A Sofia the First AU (Part 2)
You can find the link to Part 1 here.
Hello, Internet! I hope you are having a wonderful day!
In this rather long post and the one after this, I will be presenting my designs for the monster forms of Sofia and her classmates. All of these are traditionally drawn and rendered, but only the Royal Magic drawings are digitally enhanced. This post will cover her Royal Preparatory Academy friends, which I'll refer to as the Royal Prep Squad.
(Please excuse the photos if they are blurry. I was not able to enhance these before posting them here.)
Sofia herself also has a monster form, but remember that she remains human in this AU, considering her circumstances haven't actually changed. She was still a villager who became a princess the moment her mother married the king. The difference is, King Roland and the twins are monsters, which will be shown with the first sheet below.
Sheet 1:
Amber and James (Trolls)
Trolls canonically were casted out in their debut episode, "Let the Good Times Troll". Suppose this has happened early in the timeline in my AU and this would cause their revolt against the human royal family. This would explain why the twins, and by extension, their parents, are now born as this species.
But even then, King Roland II was thought by the humans of Enchancia to be the one to finally recognize humans as equals to trolls. They are right, of course. That is until Queen Lorelei passed away. In his grief, he only continued what his father had started, which were decrees and acts that favored trolls over humans.
Miranda would see her inevitable marriage to the King as an opportunity to right his father's wrongs and advocate for equal human rights. She could represent the human population and remind Roland to consider and include humans in his decisions. Along with this, she would still get to be the mother that the twins needed.
And speaking of the twins, I am not able to think of much to change them for this AU since they seem well-developed on their own, especially Amber. But what I can think of will be their Troll superpowers. These would mainly involve being able to interact with and utilize items and gears that have been enhanced with troll magic, which sources its power from the stars. (Makes sense since these trolls love to look up to stars).
Other abilities would include better climbing capability, enhanced hearing, and dark vision. Both Amber and James will have these abilities and would put them to good use. James will also possess his troll club in the beginning and would frequently use it as a tool in certain situations.
Jun and Jin (Monkeys)
These were selected mainly because it's a reference to Sun Wukong, the Monkey King from Chinese mythology. Because of this, both would act more like how a monkey would, in some cases rather unconsciously. They can consciously and effortlessly climb a tree for some fruits and giggles, but afterwards, they could unconsciously pick on each other's hair for bugs, weirding Sofia out the first time she sees it.
I was originally supposed to turn them into either dragons or qilins with fire and/or psychic abilities. But instead, I had turned them into a pair of cheeky little rascals with a penchant for the freshest fruit, a surprising amount of kung fu skills, and a love for fun and play. It just feels easier to translate their human form into monkeys compared to that of the other creatures.
I'd like to think that you can even bribe or distract them with fruit if it is of the best quality. Jin would be quite picky about this, though. Personally, I would like to change Jun's personality into something more sarcastic, like, Toph from Avatar the Last Airbender (ATLA) for I believe that it would make it more interesting.
Sheet 2
Khalid, Maya, and Leena (Naga / Lamia)
While there are a multitude of serpent deities in African mythology, it was mainly chosen for some reptilian representation in the class. Now, Khalid is considered one of its fastest and most agile students, with venomous fangs and the ability to choose whether to poison his victims. A choice I'd figured played a part in a time where he accidently bit Jun in the arm while fighting with her.
Anyways, he obviously won't be the only snake in the class, his sisters Maya and Leena will be snakes as well. But they would get to be a different snake breed as him. Khalid is a Persian Horned Viper, while the girls are Persian Cobras, half and half DNA-wise of course. But they will all share these abilities and more, making them a rather deadly combo together. (And plus, Khalid especially likes to hide things in his stomach by swallowing them. So, watch your things.)
Vivian (Banshee)
While she is not canonically nor explicitly Irish, she probably becomes so in this AU because of this form. It was chosen because of her seemingly gothic vibe, and the creature's main trait being her voice. Sure, banshee screeches pierce the ears of all who hear it, and Vivian's voice (Sabrina Carpenter) is great at singing, but the important thing is that banshees are omens of death and misfortune.
She is one of the two undead students in this batch, and it's more obvious appearance-wise. That explains why her classmates spread rumors about her, because of her ghostly abilities of levitation, going through physical surfaces, and her lack of sustenance. She sticks out like a sore thumb among her peers, making her feared and avoided, with Sofia, of course, being the first one to reach out.
Because of Sofia, she was able to control her screeching and actually incorporate it into her singing and Magical Music abilities on her mandolin. (Just imagine Sabrina Carpenter screaming like a metal guitar player. The thought of that is honestly hilarious.) These skills would come in handy especially during the battle against Vor.
Clio (Griffin)
I honestly forgot that they are canon griffin characters in the show when I selected this race for Clio. Consequently, all these griffins (i.e., Jasper) will become anthropomorphic and citizens of the Kingdom of Corinthia. Clio, specifically, would make for a great griffin.
Her eagle half represents the freedom and reach she deserves and is destined to have, while her lion half represents her courage and ferocity that she exhibits amidst difficulties. She would obviously gain the abilities and instincts of both halves, such as purring when content, occasionally scratching under wings with her beak, and loving shiny things, which is a canon trait of griffins in the show.
Now, apart from her new form, it is also noticeable how completely different her clothes are from her canon appearance. In fact, she, along with Amber and James, are due for a design update that I have not gone to doing yet. But regardless, her canon dress is not culturally accurate to a Greek royal, so a massive outfit change was in order.
Desmond (Dwarf)
I believe that this is the most appropriate form for Des. His giftedness and intellect is applicable for dwarves because of their typical knowledge of mining, blacksmithing, and inventing in fantasy RPGs. While his fear of everything can actually give him a tactical advantage over the enemy because of his size. He can easily hide and sneak up on others without them noticing.
And that actually becomes a reoccurring thing with Sofia and company. Like he would surprise people every time he approaches them, and that would embarrass him even more. However, it would help him a ton during stealth missions in the battle against Vor, since in this AU, he and Vivian are not the only ones fighting her. Everyone in the Royal Prep Squad batch is involved in the war now.
Sheet 3
Hildegard (Yeti)
Her assigned race is not exactly geographically appropriate, because yetis are reportedly seen in China and the Himalayas, while Hildy's kingdom, Freezenburg, is based on Scandinavia. I now began to realize that making her an anthropomorphic lynx would suit her better, because her aloof and posh nature can be best portrayed with a cat form. But at the time, I hadn't realized it yet.
However, her monster form was the very first one I have sketched, along with Clio's, so it's too special for me to change anymore. Besides, I won't be able to come up with special powers for her if she were just a lynx. Her yeti form will allow her to have super strength and immunity to cold temperatures. Something that will add variety to this bunch of non-human, royal youngsters.
Like with Clio, Hildy's look in canon is also not culturally accurate. I figured both princesses were designed like that so that they share a common design theme with Amber, their group leader. So that they can have more uniform look when lined up together. However, I wanted them to look as culturally accurate as possible like everyone else, so I changed it.
Zandar (Genie)
His race was one of the easiest decisions to make. He is obviously from an Arabian kingdom, Tangu, so it'd make sense if he were a genie. Zandar is a natural entertainer and in a way, is a people pleaser. Genies are meant to serve their masters and satisfy their desires by granting their wishes. So, it only makes sense that he gets to grant his classmates' wishes, this time, without limit, since he is not lamp-bound.
But that doesn't mean he is all-powerful. His powers are largely limited due to his gold braces, that he was once impatient and desperate to remove. I can imagine that in this AU, there is an episode where he succeeds in removing these restraints and then loses control of his powers during a school day. That would take a great effort from Sofia and friends to make him stop and reattach the braces. Because at that point, he already wants to stop but he just can't do so.
Hugo (Vampire)
To be honest, he was one of those who barely changed at all. I literally just made him paler, gave him fangs, lengthened his hair, and slapped a cape on his back. Even the reason why he'd pick on Sofia hasn't changed either: he would pick on her for being an ex-peasant rather than being human. This makes sense since, compared to the other creatures in this class, vampires are one of the closest to being actual humans.
The only difference being, of course, he is undead while Sofia is fully alive. He and Vivian are the only undead members of this class, but Hugo's appearance makes that fact less obvious. Therefore he is still good-looking, and he is still admired by many in the class, all the while Vivian was feared and mocked. (If you are wondering how he is surviving under the sunlight, he has either adapted to living in the sunlight or he is using some special magic sunscreen.)
Sofia (Troll-Yeti Hybrid) [Outdated / Unused Design]
Our protagonist's old monster form, which gets modified or retconned in Royal Magic. But the initial reason why she was turned into a hybrid form, specifically, was because of her father's Freezenburg origins and her likely birthplace being in Enchancia itself. But because I forgot to acknowledge her mother Miranda's Galdiz origins, I decided to remove her yeti half and all of its powers altogether.
Now as for why she was transformed to be begin with... I would like to imagine that my AU equivalent to the episode, "Substitute Cedric", the trio of Hexley Hall students, Amy, Eliot, and Kurt, would set off several potion bottles planted all around the school that essentially forces monsters to turn into humans, and vice versa. They never have thought a human student or teacher would be in the school during Prank Day.
I'll elaborate more about that last point in another post. For now, though, that is all the designed forms I have made for our Royal Prep Squad. The Charmswell Crew's designs will be featured in the next post. So, stay tuned until it comes out.
Thanks for reading this long post, and I hope you have a good day today.
Sofia the First Kids in Real Life!!! Do you recognize all of them?
This was actually super fun to put together!!! I’m pretty proud of how most of them turned out! Seems accurate to how they’d look irl. They even seem to show the same personalities as their cartoon counterparts!
Thinking lots about about how claude von riegan is clearly traumatized by his past to the point that he doesn't feel safe sharing his background with even his closest friends for fear of persecution. Really pondering how claude lives his whole life on edge because, given his situation, the danger is actually real and present anywhere he goes. And while his past wasn't given as much screentime, are we ready to accept that the violence and rejection claude faced from both of the places that he should have been able to call home is just as compelling and scarring as edelgard's or dimitri's past traumas?
