The first Gentile convert to The Way (now called Christianity) was the Ethiopian Eunuch, an individual who was marginalized and excluded from participation in the practices of faith in God on two counts: their being a foreigner AND their sexuality. Philip, led by the Spirit, reinterprets the Law as a means of widening the circle of inclusion; removing the barriers of full inclusion. As an introduction to this reading, we are reminded of Jesus' own words of affirmation of persons who are eunuchs (individuals who are not interested in or unable to have intimate relations for the purpose of procreation) as examples of great faith.
