When you realise you forgot to put a bag of expressed milk into the fridge and now you have to throw it away. Whoever said ‘You should never cry over spilled milk’ definitely wasn’t talking about breast milk.
Pumping woes
Because of dysphoria I let Dozer be in charge of the breast pump selection. He read all sorts of reviews, talked with the doula and eventually picked out a Limerick PJ's bliss pump. It's way better than the Medela we used in the hospital and if I am going to need to extract food from my body via mechanical means, I think the Bliss is my best bet. (It is, however, pink. Just a heads up in case that's a deal breaker.)
The pump rocks it 70s style with two knobs and nothing else, making it super simple to use. It also has soft silicone flanges which are way more comfortable and mimic a baby's mouth better than hard plastic. Really, I've got nothing bad to say about the pump, except for its excessive pinkness.
I also was gifted with a Kiinde twist set. This is a milk bagging system that says it works with any pump. Heads up, it does not work with the Bliss. The Bliss creates suction through the bottle, so when you replace it with a bag, the bag collapses and milk cannot enter it. This is a problem as the goal is to put milk in the bag. You could still use the bags, just pump into a bottle and transfer, but that sort of undermines the whole point of the Kiinde system which is to cut down in transferring milk back and forth. If we ever get to the point in pumping where Radish isn't immediately (same day) finishing off what I pump, we may break out the bags, because they seem more secure that the zip top Lansinoh bags for freezing. I also really like that the bag becomes a bottle. I just wish I had known in advance that Kiinde wouldn't work with my pump.
Overall, I'd keep the pump and dump the Kiinde.
Trying out power pumping.... Hopefully misty stays asleep long enough for me to finish a session

The more you know...BREAST PUMP EDITION
"Mechanically, a breast pump is analogous to a milking machine used in commercial dairy production."
I have joked that I feel like a cow when I pump. But, seriously, we're like cows when we pump.
"The breast pump is not as efficient at removing milk from the breast as most nursing babies."
Ah-ha!! So that's why my 8-month-old treats me like a drive thru while it takes me 40 minutes to get 5 crummy ounces at work.
"On June 20, 1854, the United States Patent Office issued Patent No. 11,135 to O.H. Needham for a breast pump."
Intereessring...I had no idea that breast pumps had been around this long. Curious what the culture was around them since this prudish Victorian era mostly saw breastfeeding as immodest.
"New research at Stanford University in Palo Alto, CA has shed new light on the efficiency of breast pumps. The research found that even the most effective breast pumps empty most other breasts at 50% or less efficiency. ...However, using early hand expression and combining this with massage on the breast with the pump attached was shown to increase milk volumes by 100%.
A second followup study was conducted and concluded that this "Hands on pumping technique not only improved the milk production of mothers but that the milk that is extracted through the use of this technique produces Fat-Rich calorie dense milk. The result of this study showed that a near doubling of fat content in the milk occurred...
It is therefore important for mothers to utilize massage techniques once the breast pump has finished primary extraction. The secondary hand expression and massage that occurs is highly beneficial for milk production and quality."
How come I've never heard of this before?!?!?
Hi. I'm a new mom returning to work. My hobbies include:
Pumping milk.
Good morning
I woke up with two cannonballs attached to my chest.
Auron ate on one of them and didn't even make a dent.
SO I am pumping at 6am. I'm up to 5.5oz and still delivering.
I just want to hit 6 oz so I can have a freezer bag's worth in a single sitting!
You got this, bewbz!
