(I saw a debate about whether or not it was okay for people to share fic links around without asking the authors first, since some authors may not be comfortable with the links to their fics being shared around on twitter or tumblr. so I thought this post could be a blanket permission for authors who were okay with the links to their fics being shared around!)

Hot take: when I publish my work, I do so with the full understanding that anything could happen to it. Someone might share a link with a friend or on their blog - that's the desired outcome.

But someone could also steal it entirely and publish it as their own. Or feed it into an AI and ask it to create something similar, and then publish it as their own creation. Because this is the internet, and some people are trash.

I'm not saying this should be normalized. It's completely unacceptable. But you need to be aware of it for your own mental health.

I think a good analogy is parents and children. It's unlikely your parents raised you for twenty years only to watch your friends betray you, your spouses have affairs, and your boss cheat you out of your salary.

We can't objectively control the actions of others. But we can influence how their actions affect us. And we can control the philosophy and morals we preach to others.
