Book 4 : Circe by Madeline Miller
I must first confess that I didn't read or watch any Percy Jackson as a child or consume any other source of western mythology, so the two books I've read by Madeline Miller was eye opening. The first book I read was The Song of Achilles. I personally don't like reading a love story as the main plot, but the tale of Achilles and Patroclus is the epitome of love (since then I promised myself that I would read a more variety of books).
Now coming to the book Circe, it is about Circe (duh! 😅) the daughter of Helios (Titan Sun God) and Perse (a nymph). The story is narrated by Circe and this gives an insight to all of her inner monologues which resonated strongly with me (a reason why I love this book so much). Though she was born into royalty, she has no beauty or talent or any of those superficial things that were important to them, instead she was kind, empathetic and most importantly hardworking (giving this book a feminist touch to it). Her journey to witchcraft gained momentum when she was exiled to a lonely island (igniting my love for cottagecore 🙈), where she displays a development of character from being a docile, mundane person to a strong, independent powerful woman whose perseverance makes her feared by the Gods. I have to admit, there are a few drab portions, but once you're past that you'll be glad to have stayed.
"Humbling women seems to me a chief pastime of poets. As if there can be no story unless we crawl and weep."
I am not going to flood feeds with pics although it can be tempting, but I just wanted to update everyone since my blog will likely be much more quiet for some time: our little Mageling finally made her appearance back on the evening of the 19th. I am exhausted, but I could not be happier. G is obsessed (we already have a great shot of him playing CoD with our group while holding her on his lap) and the pups are 100% in love and are taking turns bodyguarding her. Here's to the newest up and coming nerd! 🎉
I really wish that when I said “I’m ready for this to be over and for everything to go back to normal” I didn’t have to specify that what I mean is “I am antsy all the time and slipping back into some very negative habits and I will be incredibly relieved when it is safe for us all to go about our daily lives as usual”, and that what I mean is not “I am bored by this global pandemic and therefore I will be ignoring all of the CDC guidelines from now on” or even “there were no major systemic flaws in any part of our society before the pandemic and therefore we should return to blindly accepting everything as it was”.
Low key, Drop Dead by the Mechanisms, anything Trocadero, and the Amazing Devil inspired me to start learning guitar two weeks ago. I learned some tabs to do the hands with the muscly memory thing. Then came chords.
Holy shit, chords fucking hurt. I'm going to have to bust out my wrist brace, but I can plunk out a song or two on the high e string now, which is more than I can say for myself two weeks ago.
i've only been on quarantine (officially) for 2 weeks and i've already reached "just chop off all the hair on my head!!!" i won't actually do it, but i do feel that way lmao
in other news my animal crossing island is coming along nicely! i think today i'll work on a bamboo/zen area and a beach picnic area ☺️
Comcast has seen fit to grace us with some free movies, so I’m watching the spy who dumped me, and I’ve had most of a large daiquiri, so I have some thoughts;
1. Kate McKinnon is fucking hilarious
2. I’m roughly the same age as mila kunis, and I’m having a little bit of cognitive dissonance over the fact that she has visible wrinkles and laugh lines, and yet is also still incredibly hot? Like does that mean that I can still be hot with my laugh lines and crows feet?
3. I didn’t realize that Gillian anderson is in this and asfddhfkfkgkgl? Assdfgghodjsge? And ashdoekeuindggsb?
In related news, maybe I’m not as straight as i originally assumed?
