my family was fairly conservative growing up (I was raised in mainline protestant churches that were on the evangelical side. I like to say that my parents were closet fundamentalists: if you asked them if they were fundies, they’d have said no. but they were, and to some degree still are vaguely fundamentalist. high on grace but also high on judgement)
and over the past decade, ever since I first came out at 15, my mom and my dad (well mostly my mom) and I have fought a ton about my sexuality. and for the last 5 years, ever since I realized I was trans, we’ve fought a fair bit about transness and gender identity too.
my parents definitely aren’t as conservative now as they were ten years ago. not by a long shot. they’re still pretty conservative in their doctrine of faith (although more queer affirming than I’d ever believed possible).
honestly? I wouldn’t have stayed in relationship with them if they hadn’t been willing to change as much as they have.
but I’d basically decided I was never going to get them to honour my social transition, name change and pronouns.
and then a week ago or so, since my siblings have been back home for christmas (we live in BC, relax, the pandemic isn’t as severe here as it is just about anywhere else in Canada or even in much of Europe), both of my younger siblings have had short conversations about my name and pronouns with me.
and they’ve really committed to switching over.
and they’re not perfect— no one is. it takes time. but every time they correct themselves I feel so, so loved and so, so seen.
it’s unbelievable. my brother said “bye [birth name] oh whoops, bye Leny, I love you” when I walked out the door five minutes ago and now I’m just sitting in my car and crying happy tears.
anyways I think this is what gender euphoria feels like and it’s unfathomably glorious.
I wish I could go back in time and tell 15 year old me that the fighting wouldn’t last forever and that a decade later we’d be accepted and cared for this much.
my mom is even trying too. every time she calls me Leny my soul sings.
