Mono's Asian GL Awards 2024
I tried to watch a lot of Asian lesbian shows this year - and I thought it would be funny to do a round-up!
Transcripts & some more comments under the cut.
If you want my InDesign template for this, DM me. Cheers!
I've recently been trying to get into thai dramas only watched a couple and they've been good so far but the GL ones omg they're so good if you have a list of them to watch I would love that I feel like I've missed a lot of dramas in general since I took a 3 year hiatus not because I was burnt out on them but life was too busy.
Hi Anon!
Welcome back to dramaland! Honestly I have a huge list of GL k-dramas but I've only seen a few thai gls. I'm guessing there are a bunch of people on tumblr that would be waaaay better at reccing them than I would!
Most of the gl couples I've seen have been mixed into other bls (which honestly I love to see it!).
Delete Your Past was kinda interesting and very short if you want a fast one (very low budget) but I'll tag @lurkingshan in case they want to hijack this post (or anyone else who loves and watches thai gls).
If you're interested in K-drama gls, here's a list!
Lesbian Romance/ WLW K-Dramas:
And... if you see a really great one, definitely hope back into my inbox - I love a good and cute queer rec!
Had a brainwave the other day and did some research and as far as I can tell Thailand does not have a screenwriters guild and holy shit that explains so much about how they produce their queer dramas/BLs/GLs
This is why they can make 50+ different shows a year.
This is why, with a few shining exceptions, most of them, even the really really good ones have some story element that leaves the audience feeling: hmmm felt like that needed another draft/pass
Because they do! But of course without a guild these writers probably aren't guaranteed multiple paid draft passes (and if they aren't being paid for it should not be doing them, to be clear) But that's why all these dramas are Written Like That.
Oh My God.
(For context of how it works in Canada, and probably most other international guilds though i can't guarantee specifity, screenwriters get their fees paid for an hour long drama script like below:
10% signing
20% outline
50% 1st draft
20% 2nd draft
What this means is writers are getting paid for three different writing stages (outline to second draft) getting notes from their showrunner/producers on each new pass. Most will also probably do some unpaid polishes (not heavy editing/rewrites but a few more revisions on final notes)
(this is also not to mention the production fee, a percentage of an episode's budget owed to a writer on start of Principle Photography)
Japan has a screenwriters guild. so does South Korea. I would imagine this is (part) of why Japanese and Korean queer dramas are often much shorter, but also very tightly written.
This is to all say, I've been on a bit of Thai drama binge lately, and I love their shows! I love how unafraid they are to play with genre (time loop! murder mystery! soul mates! hesists! vampires!) and also tone (sweet sugary teen romance! slow burn college kids! mafia angst!) I love how much variety there is, how many episodes they get to play with, how many of these shows play with complex themes.
But no matter how much I love some of these shows (and many of them are very good) I eventually come to a point where Something isn't working from a story/writing perspective. And it finally clicked why. They don't have to pay their writers!
Anyway i guess the TLDR is UNIONIZE

I'm watching Zero Photography, and the whole "Pa trying to get Ink's attention" sequence is truly additional proof that Pa & Pat are definitely related, I cannot 😂
like, I've never had to see Pa interact with an Ink who isn't already infatuated with her
and Pa's not-so-subtle-bordering-on-over-the-top attempts are killing me 💀😂 they remind me so much of Pat (which is endearing).
The way Ink reacts to Pa's attempts is also wild to see. In Bad Buddy, Ink gravitates towards Pa, welcomes her presence, is playful with her, and cares for her in like every scene. There's just this warmth that settles around them when Ink & Pa are together (that Ink exudes when Pa's around)
so to see THIS Ink feels slightly disorienting lol. It really reminds me of the dynamic Pat & Pran have in Aroma-nce so Sweet (an AU fanfic by @dimplesandfierceeyes where Pat & Pran are strangers who meet at university.) The relationship development is written so well! but I definitely had a moment when I needed to recalibrate & remind myself they were strangers and Pran was not going to automatically be pulled into Pat's shenanigans because Pran doesn't KNOW Pat. A similar thing is happening as I watch Ink respond with hesitancy and confusion, versus the amusement and soft affection I'm used to seeing lmao.
