transness often has ties to masculinity on top of femininity. whether it's because someone is a trans man or transmasc, or if they used to be a boy or a man, or if they were forced to be a boy/man.

trans women and transfems who can't, or don't want to, transition or pass exist. nonbinary people aren't strictly androgynous or Woman Lite(TM). trans men and transmascs who are virtually indistinguishable from cis men are still trans and belong in trans spaces.

masculinity is part of transness, no matter if it's beneficial or detrimental to an individual.

by being anti-men and anti-masculinity, you are being unsafe for your non-cis siblings.

Anti masculinity does not only harm people who are seen as masculine / masculinized forcibly by oppressive power structures, like POC (racism in the form of anti masculinity does in fact exist), butches, trans dudes, etc, but also anyone who does not share the same ideology.

Think the demonization of queer women who like men and choose to date them openly. The "bi woman with her boyfriend" shit, straight trans women being seen as a "loss" for not instead being a lesbian, Certain Lesbians considering Bi women who have been with men as "tainted" or "ruined", etc..

Every step you take in our community has some faux-progressive reason on why tearing each other is down is actually "okay" because obviously! you are "punching up" against the Predatory, Oppressive Masculine!

This isn't even an LGBT-specifc issue, either. It's an issue with faux feminism/activism everywhere. People who centre their activism around poor understandings of oppression, leading them to centre their world view around anti-masculine rhetoric, are in every space.

An example of this happening outside of lgbt spaces is when I made a post about how harassing women who don't wish to participate in 4B (it's effectively just political lesbianism all over again..) is weird and misogynistic, just to be harassed because OBVIOUSLY women are at fault for their own oppression if they have any relationship /NIA at all with a man.

Harassing women for not fitting your standards of how they should behave in GENERAL is anti-feminist behavior, however, it is reworked into a "feminist" framework, making being vile to other women "okay".

Another example of this is people who see PIV ("penis in vagina") sex as inherently self degrading for women and equivocal to self harm; or who will act like women wearing makeup or choosing to do sex work is "living for the male gaze". When, in actuality, it's just a woman living her life and people are defining her by her relationships to men.

People are using anti-masculinity to trim the fat of their "progressive" spaces to make a more extreme echo-chamber that supports their harmful views - and they do not mind harming any minority - even ones in their own group - to do it.

When you centre your ideology around trying to centre yourself as the ultimate victim and another group as the ultimate perpetrator, it falls flat. Every time. That's not how oppression works and it never will be.

Anti-Masculinity definitely is a more prominent way people do this, & it disgusts me because it speaks to historical white feminism.

Frankly, we need to cut the bullshit and stop pretending it is something it's not. People will slap some vaguely-progressive words on things that don't make sense reflected back onto the real world & truthfully only ever target minorities - and others will defend it because it SOUNDS like something they'd agree with. How about we start critically thinking and calling it what it is? Performative & counteractive to any of our fights against oppressive powers.

Trans Musings #40

Following up on my last post about bad arguments about transandrophobia, I've also seen backlash against another term, queerandrophobia, for similar reasons. This idea that men don't need specialized terms for their oppression because men are the default for everything needs to be taken apart in queer spaces. By this, I don't mean that we shouldn't acknowledge that patriarchy or bias exists, but rather that we need to DECENTER the male experience by making masculinity/men just another category like every other gender. In the context of prejudice against queer people, queerphobia would be a general term that applies to all queer people and queerandrophobia would be a specific term for the biases against queer men. I think terms for hatred of queer femininity and queer POC should also exist as I definitely experienced the former when I lived as a woman and still experience the latter as an Asian American.

Below is a description of how specifically the English language is biased towards maleness. There's been a push for more gender-neutral language but there's been less talk of the flip side of this, which is the dethroning of men-as-default. I might also make a post about gender bias in my other spoken language, Mandarin Chinese.

How male bias manifests:

Generic masculine pronouns: The use of "he" to refer to a person of unspecified gender is a classic example.

Man-based terms: Words like "mankind," "man-made," and "manpower" use "man" as a prefix, suggesting it is the default human form.

Androcentrism: This is the belief that men are the central or most important group. This can be seen when male characters are overrepresented in children's books or when specific occupations are assumed to be male (e.g., "fireman," "policeman").

Grammatical gender: While English doesn't have grammatical gender in the same way as some other languages, the historical use of masculine terms as the default has created a similar effect.

Suffixes and titles: Words ending in "-ess" for women (e.g., "actress," "waitress") can reinforce the idea that the male form is the default and the female form is the variation.

trans dudes are viewed by cis women as dudes they are capable of hurting. they take out all their pent up upsetness with oppression, sexual

harassment, etc and push it onto trans men. they are objects to take out their emotions on because they don't have any power againsg them, it's the roles reversed for once. a *woman having societal power over a man*.. you're enough of a man that they can take out their issues on you with and treat u like trash "because ur a man", but not enough of a man for them to have any consequences because you hold ni power.

so ive been kinda refering two two phenomena in my head as Specific Terms and i just realized that. maybe not everyone has this language

queerandrophobia

(Not queermisogyny, which is different)

when an oppressive party (mainly, if not entirely, homophobic transphobic cishets) perceives a (typically queer) individual as of the female sex but theyre being female "wrong" by being masculine or having a 'lack' of femininity. queeronqueer queerandrophobia is typically fueled by radfem and truscum ideologies ("theyfabs", "transtrenders", anyone who isnt "trying hard enough" in their transition). this is akin to transandrophobia but is a broader scope and not synonymous

the inverse is queergynophobia (when a person whos perceived Male is 'feminine' in some way, even if neither of those are true. this is akin to transmisogyny but has a broader scope is not synonymous)

this includes, but is not limited to:

intersex individuals that present female/have a female sig but also have some masculine traits due to their variation

butch lesbians

transmascs and trans men

'cis passing' trans women/fems (ie transfems who have transitioned so hard that cishet boomers think theyre afab) that still have some masculine traits

any nonbinary individuals who fit the bill, especially "theyfabs"

a black woman with short hair existing anywhere white men (/joking tone but its true)

queermisogyny

disclaimer, this isnt something i coined but rather my interpretation of another users definition. i cant remember the OP, but afaik they were an anon on status-quo-hater's blog

when a queer individual, like above, is interpreted as "doing womanhood wrong" or "doing femininity wrong"

how does this differ from queergynophobia: queergynophobia places emphasis on the interpretation of a queer individuals sex and their 'failings', based on gender presentation. queermisogyny focuses on the interpretation of a queer individuals gender and their 'failings', based on gender presentation and actions. these two have massive overlaps with each other, transmisogyny, and transandrophobia but they are not mutually exclusive or synonyms.

etymology

queer (LGBTQ+ or outside of pericishet expectations; refers to the derogatory definition vs any other definitions) + andro (greek for "man"; connotatively refers to masculinity or "man-like") + phobia

queer + gyno (root in the greek word for women; connotatively refers to femininity or "woman-like") + phobia

queer + misogyny (miso + gyne-- latin for "woman hater")

why these terms and not x or y?

i can already hear the arguments of "this is just misogyny, this is just transphobia" and while i agree that, if you look at individual parts of these terms, they can be similar to (and likely rooted in) misogyny/transphobia/other bigotry. but when you take these terms as a Whole, theyre the broad experience of a specific group of people which cannot be boiled down to Just misogyny or Just transphobia or Just sexism etc etc. these words are not exclusionary or in spite of transmisogyny/any other terms. if anything, these are created as umbrella terms to describe sexism and gendered violence In the queer community and directed At the queer community.
