N7 Inktober 02 - Weave
From harmless pranks to dead krogans wrapped in spider webs... well thats Mass Effect for you 😅
This mission was an intense one, but I will always save the Rachni queen, feels like the right thing to do.
I didn't bring Tali to my mission but I watched her reactions from a video, its hilarious so I wanted add her 😁
Am I the only one who finds the Rachni mission in ME3 incredibly annoying, especially if you spared the Rachni Queen in ME1? I'm constantly wondering whether the whole squad was sniffing one of the Spore Pods at the start of the mission, or where this aversion to logic comes from.
Right at the start, when Shepard and their team enter the underground tunnels, you come across the spore pots – clearly organic structures criss-crossed with black cables that practically scream ‘Reaper’. … Barely two steps further on, James asks, ‘On the ground, Shepard. Reaper tech?’, to which Shepard replies, ‘Maybe’. And in the next chamber, you encounter the first Ravager, accompanied by a horde of Husks and protected by a Reaper barrier generator. The companions’ comment: “Is that Rachni?”
Not Reapers. Rachni.
I mean, if this thing doesn't scream Reaper, then what does?
Throughout the entire mission, whenever they’re referred to, it’s Rachni, not Reapers. Not once during the game did I hear a Cannibal being referred to as a Batarian, or a Husk as a Human. They USED TO BE Batarian and human, but now they are Reapers. But the Ravagers are still Rachni.
At the end of this battle, Shepard reports to Grunt: “Rachni confirmed, modified and dangerous.” Still not "Yeah, we have a Reaper-infestation down her." just… modified.
At the end of the chamber, James whistles at the sight of the unmistakable Reaper tech and remarks, “The Reapers have really messed this place up,” to which Shepard replies, “Agreed. Let’s find out why.”
What do you mean, ‘why’? Shouldn't that be obvious by now? Even if you do this mission as soon as it gets available, so far, we’ve already encountered reaper-fied Humans, Batarians, Turians – hell, they’ve even cobbled together a Frankenstein’s monster out of Turian and Krogan.
By this point, the characters have long been aware that the Reapers transform organic species into their foot soldiers. Nevertheless, the Reapers’ responsibility for this place continues to be treated as a mere possibility, whilst the Rachni are clearly the enemy.
At one point, Garrus wonders why the Rachni can (or would) breed on a non-toxic planet, whilst James ponders whether the Reapers might maybe have altered them.
James, I like you, I really do, but seriously? Organically reared Rachni usually don't grow double laser cannons out of their backs, so yes, they've MAYBE been altered!
When you finally find the captive queen, she is accused of not disappearing and ceasing to interfere like she promised when Shepard set her free.
Does it look as though she’s here of her own free will? You might as well accuse the Batarian of allowing themselves to be harvested and turned into Cannibals. Or all the Humans you encounter as Husks during the mission, why didn’t they go into hiding instead of allowing themselves to be turned into Husks?
Instead, the whole mission is treated as if the Rachni are the only species for whom the fact that the Reapers are using them is due to their own personal and moral failings.
Arc Effect AU. Upon talking to the Asari that gives the message to Shepard and they talk just as she is about to leave the Asari asks Shephard to wait once more, and that she also has a package for the Rachni Queens "Little Knight" and says she will deliver it to the ship.
After recruiting both Thane and Samara Shephard finally finds the package and opening leaves her to laugh out loud as the others all look at what could possible make Shephard Crack up that hard and as they see what is in the box they also start to laugh.
Later when Shepard recruits Jaune and he is settling down she says that she actually had a gift for him from the Queen with a huge smirk on her face leaving him suspicious, upon getting the package and opening it he is holding a Rachni silk onesie shaped like a Rachni warrior, with the sleeves being those tentacles that they have causing him to look at Shapard embarrassed while teases him over his doting grandmother he now has and later during the night he can sometimes be seen grabbing snacks from the kitchen in said onesie
Yaawa: Greetings, Gedeon. What brings you all the way out here?
Jaune: Thought I'd stop by and introduce you to someone
*Jaune then reveals the bundle in his arms as a baby. Yawa gets closer and sees the baby, her tentacles twitching with excitement*
Yaawa: How precious... Her song, it is so bright and clean, like the rays of the sun, and so vast that it could be its own galaxy.
Jaune: Heh, I guess that's one thing she's inherited from me.
Yaawa: Have you given her a name?
Jaune: Not yet.
Yaawa: I see... I believe I have a name that shall be fitting for one such as her
Jaune: What is it?
Yaawa: Her name shall be... Nita
Jaune: Nita?
Yaawa: Yes. Though I suspect you might be more comfortable using how it is said in your tongue.
Jaune: How is it said in my language?
Yaawa: Grace
*Jaune's eyes widened for a moment before looking down at the baby girl and smiling softly*
Yaawa: Is the name not to your liking?
Jaune: No... No, it's perfect.
Yaawa: I am glad. Let it be known, Nita, Daughter of Gedeon, is under our protection. Those who wish to do her great harm will first suffer at our hands.
Jaune: *Smirks* Good to know
He's a kid, after all.
The Rachni queen and Ben. They're one of my favorite species in the games.
N7 Month Day 27: One song Rachni queen sings a lullaby to babies
The Queen crooned in frequencies he was not built to hear. A prismatic chorus of thought rippled through Garrus’ mind, and he felt as though he existed everywhere and nowhere at once; he was his breath as much as his blood, as much as his bone; the space between him and the cold earth below him and the scuttling creatures before and behind him were meaningless. He was they and they were he; there was no longer any distance between his mind and hers. Theirs.
Katabasis by @beltsquid for the @shakarianminibang, really awesome post-Reaper war fic, go give it a read!
