Trendy vs. Stylish
I personally feel it is important to establish the difference between trendy and stylish and how it affects one’s personal style. First and foremost, trendy is not always stylish. A trend is defined as, “any form of behaviour that develops among a large population and is collectively followed with enthusiasm for some period, generally as a result of the behavior’s being perceived as novel in some way.” (Urban Dictionary). Trends usually last for a season and on rare occasions, trends can measure as short as a few weeks.
Trends can be overwhelming and defining. There’s an expectation that has to be met, especially if you’re following a celebrity trend. It’s very easy to lose one’s sense of self while being trendy. And without self are you really stylish?
Style is a bit of an abstract concept. Some define it as expression through styling and beauty. Others define style as, “doing something unique or activating and arranging an appealing appearance” (Dictionary.com). Now I, JasmineRaquel, define style as the embodiment of one’s own beauty, expressed through appearance or language. Being you is stylish. The capability of finding interest in one’s clothing and developing it into your own is mesmerizing. Most trendsetters are people that are proudly flaunting and embracing their sense of self while displaying their style to the world. Not being trendy does not equate to a lack of style. And to be frank, all trends are not cute! (sorry croc wearers). So the next time you’re in the store and want to buy that sheath polka dot button-down dress, do it! Because being you is what’s really stylish.
