All mine hollow knight / silksong oc
I was today years old when I learned that the image for Rakhana, the homeworld of the drell —
— appears to be a repurposed (and upside down) image of Korriban from space from BioWare's earlier Knights of the Old Republic :
I did not see that coming.

Re hanar mistreatment of drell
So there definitely seems to be something sketchy going on with the way the hanar treat the drell. Exactly what’s going on is a matter of headcanon, and I assume there are plenty of perfectly decent hanar and plenty more who are doing bad things with good intentions, but I’d like to add some possibilities:
Hanar arguments for keeping the drell under control, and not letting them have power, involve a lot of “But obviously they can’t be trusted to look after themselves! Look what they did to Rakhana!”
To complicate this: there’s a significant political/religious Kahje drell faction who keep insisting that the mess Rakhana’s in had nothing to do with industrialisation, and they should be allowed to industrialise Kahje the same way.
Thoughts?
The drell are a species of one-eyed aquatic reptiles originally from the planet Rakhana. Eventually their world died, and the hanar allowed them to escape to Kahje. The only condition was that the drell had to always wear hanar joke makeup. The drell hate this makeup, and because of this, drell tend to be very broody and angry. The drell understand that this is a part of hanar culture, so they don’t resent the hanar themselves, just the makeup and the Enkindlers. They hate jokes and they’re all gay.

A Creation Myth of the Drell Planet by @galifreyas
I’ll admit I’m a sucker for myths. This one is really well thought out and so beautifully written from the lyrical language to the symbolism. It’s short and succinct, but incredibly powerful. I think my favorite paragraph is the last one with it’s truly beautiful language and imagery. Magnificent.
Headcanon: Colonies & cities in the Mass Effect verse. Part 1: Drell cities
Former Rakhana (drell homeworld) cities:
Ikuit. It used to be a town with low population density, but it was a common tourist destination. Hometown of a somewhat famous drell poet Ishiy, it was often visited by literature and poetry enthusiasts. One of the few places with a beach, although it is very dry in climate regardless. Ikuit’s beach is so beautiful some followers of the old drell religions believe that it is an glimpse into what Kalahira’s shores look like.
Seharra. Used to be one of Rakhana’s most densely populated cities, and it was among one of the places to fall most quickly in their wars that nearly drove them to extinction. While it was a city of beautiful architecture and offered beautiful culinary diversity, it also features some of the worst ghettos on Rakhana.
Niuluku. One of the most ancient drell cities. Though nowadays it is mostly rubble, efforts are made to rebuild it due to its historic significance. The shrine, Arashu’s Shrine, has been rebuild and remains a destination for drell who feel lost and scared, praying for protection and guidance from the goddess.
Avaruh. The former capital of Rakhana. Nearly completely destroyed. Known for the night life it used to offer.
