Maul is not one for gifts. Especially surprises. Starlight was unsure why they thought this would end well. One moment Maul was going over the set of sentences written out for him in Mando’a (he had been progressing well in the language and was prideful at starlights praise on his grasp of it) the next the small package set before him was knocked to the side.
“Don’t you want your surprise?” It’s been more than 20 years and he can still hear her.
What was the surprise? He would never know. Just the look of disappointment and sadness on her face.
His only “friend”. The only gift and he never got to have it.
“I’m sorry, I should have known better than to startle,” his Starlight is already scrambling to pick up the small box. “Forgive me my lord Maul,”
The formalities. He did not want the formalities.
“Set it here.” He demanded, trying to not let the desperation slip through.
His Starlight looked to him. Concern. Worry. What chapter of the zabraks past resulted in such a response.
“It was just a gift, a ill timed surprise it seems.”
They set it before him. Small. Neatly wrapped.
“Do you want to open it?” He looks to his starlight, trying not to focus on the shadow of the smaller figure next to them.
“I would,” a smile on their face.
It’s a small satchel. Big enough to clip onto his tunic belt. Inside wrapped in cloth is an array of tools.
“I figured it be best to have your own set of tools, you seem to have a knack for tinkering with the droids and improving them.”
Something ordinary. Something they had noted that he enjoyed. Maybe the surprise was like this.
An item that his friend noticed would make things better. That he dared say he would enjoy…
His starlight smiles, “ I know it’s not much.”
Maul is unsure what to say beyond thanks.
“I suspect you’ll get grander gifts from the syndicate heads.”
What could be grander? He will keep these tools close. His Starlight got them for him.
“I don’t require grand gifts.” He begins to place the satchel on his belt. “ It seems I delayed my start to these studies you gave me.”
Another small smile, “ You’ll breeze by them. I’m happy you liked the surprise.”
He nods to his Starlight, he did. A first gift from a friend was worth it.
