Sometimes I get a bit sad and upset about how un-ecofriendly doll customizing can be. I want to take care of the earth. (I know that individual change will only get us so far, and it’s really an industrial/societal change we need, but I digress.)
So, I decided to come up with a few ways I could be better about my consumption and waste generation in this hobby.
1. Only buy used dolls. I’m not much of a collector of dolls. I prefer to customize them. This was something I had planned to do when I first got into the hobby, but have fallen out of it. Pretty much any doll I want I can find on eBay or at the thrift store second-hand. I love that hunt.
2. Use second-hand materials. Brushes, paint, fabric, I can find nearly anything at thrift stores, eBay, or the Center for Creative Reuse in my city.
3. Avoid rerooting with nylon and the like. I can reuse factory hair, root with second-hand yarn, and natural fibers. All ways to diminish the number of micro-plastics I’m putting out into the environment.
4. Get creative and resues supplies when building props. Chopsticks, old packaging, twist ties, you name it.
5. Reusing old clothes that can’t be donated. Ripped or partially stained human clothes can often still be cut up to make doll-sized outfits.
6. Sell on dolls that I don’t need. I’ll clean up dolls I don’t want and sell or pass them on will help put more of them back out in the world for others to enjoy.
I know there’s some overlap in these thoughts, but I wanted to share. If you have any other suggestions let me know. And I know that not everybody is going to want to operate this way, and that’s okay!
