I was thinking about representation... If straight people were underrepresented, Imagine Me & You would be called a straight movie. It’d be the exact same movie, no genderswapping or anything. People would be like “have you heard of this movie, it has a straight man in it!” And you’d say yes, but he gets cheated on, and his wife leaves him for a woman. And they’d answer “well at least he doesn’t die, and you know what, he shares a Moment with a woman at the end of the movie. I’ve seen that actress play straight before.”
ok i realize this is kinda an unpopular opinion but i don’t actually care if the actors portraying queer or autistic characters are queer or autisitc. i don’t think requiring actors to disclose that kind of information to be allowed to play a role is helpful or good in any way. (my opinion does differ slightly when it comes to more visible diversity, like visible disabilities or people of color, but that’s a whole other post lol.) if a character is queer or autistic i Don’t Want To Know Whether The Actor Is Or Not Unless They Willingly Want To Admit That to countless strangers online and also deal with potential career consequences of that. i much much much rather have straight person mcstraight play a gay character than have a single queer person ever have their safety and comfort and autonomy over who knows about their identity overridden.
the stuff that needs to change is research and writing and directing - doing proper research on the identity, involving queer and autistic people in the creation of the characters, sensitivity reading and editing, education for the directors on how to portray it respectfully, more diversity in the whole ass movie industry in general not just straight white cis people, etc - NOT forcing actors to disclose personal (and potentially damaging to their careers) information.
minorities in eah
ARE SO UNCOMMON (not including backgrounders) and like?? we gotta talk abt this tbh
can i, white person, write about POC characters?
thanks for asking!
writing poc as a white person
absolutely! in fact I would encourage it. please write many poc in your stories. however, there are a few things you should know.
many people think it’s bad for a writer of a differing ethnicity to write about the struggles of another ethnicity. because you might mess it up. solution: have a poc in your story, but don’t write about how being black/asian/hispanic/etc. affects their life. which is a legitimate concern, but! at the same time it is necessary to point out those differences because we are all intrinsically different because of our ethnicities and it would be a worse crime to ignore our unique differences.
that was a lot to take in, wasn’t it? probably because those two statements were pretty much contradictory. so what does that mean for the writer writing about a character with a different ethnicity than their own?
here’s the most important thing: don’t get really deep about race and ethnicity or whatever, but don’t completely ignore it. it’s a part of all of our lives and it’s not meant to be left out. so, mention it a few times, leave it out for the reader to see, but don’t give a lot of page time to it. ask the question, but don’t answer it, because you can’t.
another smaller thing to remember; a lot of mixed race people exist! I myself am wasian. don’t write mixed race people the same as mostly black or mostly white people. do some of your own research. I may even make a post ab mixed people specifically?? maybe
hopefully this helped answer your question, if you have any more, feel free to send another ask or message me :)
if you’re a poc and disagree, I’d like to hear your thoughts as well!
More progress on Square Legs
Sup gamers, gamerettes, and game people. Miles here back at it again with the shizzy rpg maker stuff.
First item of business. I bought aesprite. Because of this the color pallet of the game is going through some tweaks and receiving some overall visual touch-ups.
Here’s a before n’ after of Greenton Forest!
Before
After
As you can see I’ve changed up a lot of the colors, as well as added a cool lil parallax thingy to the trees. I hope these changes aren’t too jarring. Lemme know if you prefer the old or the new!
In other news a new map is in the works! Here’s an early look at an amusement park place you get to visit during your quest!
I’m trying to see if I can somehow make the roller coaster ride-able but no promises.
Finally my most exciting news. New characters are on the way! Including a new party member!
Meet Triangula
Triangula is a butch lesbian fighter class with two arms and no legs!
Twice the punch and none of the walk!
I’m hoping with this addition I can add more diversity to the cast of characters in a way that is un-offensive or pandery! I’m also wanting to add a dating feature to this game. Because Square Legs and Circle Girl are both BI, they will have plenty of options within their party to choose from. (Spoiler alert, Rovarli WILL be a party member). This means you can play one session of the game where square and circle date each other and another session where cirlce and triangula date eachother and square and rovarli date each other.
This is all super ambitious and I worry some of it will fall through the cracks or will straight up be scrapped from the game. In the event that I were to get rid of this feature, which relationship path would yall prefer to see? Just to be clear if Circle and Square get together, rest assured there WILL be companion characters for Rovarli and Triangula to get with, so either way there will still be some gay/lesbian representation goin on here!
Please leave some feedback in the replies/reblogs! And reblog this post if you can!
In the meantime you can play the demo here

Arab Women
You know, everytime we see Arab women on tv shows or movies especially in hollywood, they almost always look like this:
Which is a very important representation. However, I sort of started getting this feeling that everytime anybody hears the phrase “Arab woman”, the same image pops in their brain again and again. And while this is an accurate image in some cases, Arab women don’t all look or dress the same.
Some of us do fit that image, but others may look like this:
Others might look like this:
Or like this:
Or this:
Or this:
Or even like this:
Oh, and have I mentioned this?
And while I’m happy we’re getting a little bit of recognition and representation in hollywood, it is not enough! And I for one, would like to see some changes, which is why I created this little post, where I own none of the pictures above, to kind of show some of the different ways we might look SO THE NEXT TIME I SAY I’M ARAB, I DON’T GET THE “BUT YOU DON’T LOOK ARAB” REACTION.
Thank you, and have a good day!
Finished Reading
Radio Silence // Alice Oseman
Synopsis: Francis Javier isn't just the boring, academically focused headgirl of her school, not that she has any friends who know the real her. The Francis who wears fun clothes and draws fanart for her favorite small podcast, Universe City. After the creator contacts her to draw for the show, she accidentally finds out his identity. He's the boy that lives across the street. She used to be friends with his sister. She's the reason she ran away.
Points of interest (includes possible tw): multiple main characters of color, demisexual (own voices) and bisexual and gay representation, child abuse (emotional, non-physical),
Opinions: This is a great book. It’s like a mix of Tash Hearts Tolstoy and what I think Welcome to Nightvale is, with some hints from Stiefvater’s The Raven Cycle series. It’s very much about friendship, and I really appreciated how blatant they were that the main male and female characters were not going to end up together because goddamn it is annoying how often that happens for no good reason.
I always love me some representation so it’s great how much there was in here. The characters have a range of sexual and racial identities, and the author makes a point to use the exact word for each of them in at least one scene (big points there bc bisexuality and any ace spectrum hardly ever gets that).
The characters are all very much written by a younger person, because it is obvious that they actually know the kind of things that teenagers are actually into. There are references from disney channel movies to Hogwarts houses to tv shows like Parks and Recreation and Supernatural. It’s all very tumblr but not in a cringy way, more like someone who’s been around here a while.
I don’t really have any negatives for the book, what it did it did well. I am not gripped with the need to go out an buy a copy for myself, but I will likely be checking it out from the library again at some point. It’s definitely something I would recommend, go check it out!
Rating: 4 out of 5 (great representation, great book, but probably not going to go out of my way to buy my own copy)
