Boss! Boss! Help me! I’m being harassed! Oh no, he can’t hear me! He’s got his airpods in!
(RIP to my suitemate, who was harassed by a mom attempting to find her guitarist son a date in a GODDAMN COSTUME JEWELRY STORE)
Retail Problem: Touching
I have had to explain this MULTIPLE TIMES, and people still won’t get the hint... If you’re dealing with a retail employee, DO NOT TOUCH THEM! I don’t care if you’re asking a question. I don’t care if you’re being casual. I don’t care if its part of a compliment. DO NOT TOUCH THEM! Even when people pat me on the back, I say “Don’t touch me.”.
I’ve had people nearly rip earrings out of my ears, pull earbuds out of my ears, creepily massage my neck, run their hands along my shoulders, touch my back and pat my back... But the worst, most chronic, problem is people touching my hair.
I do my hair in such a way that it can either be in pretty beach waves, or a single spiral down my back. At work, my hair is usually in a ponytail... So the spiral is typically present...
I’m aware that people love it and think its pretty. I get compliments all the time. I literally don’t go through a day where someone says “I love your hair!” in some form or fashion. I even show and tell people how I do it. While I do my hair like this simply because its made my morning routine a lot shorter and easier, not to mention I think its gorgeous, I’ll admit, the compliments are nice.... Except in one case: When people touch it.
I am a Courtesy Clerk... Also known as a Grocery Bagger or Cart Runner. I sack groceries, push (or carry them) out to people’s cars, load the groceries into the cars, and bring the carts back. When its not busy, and I have nothing to do, I’ll help people who don’t really need it... I just wanna kill time.
In most instances, when people touch my hair, I say “Please don’t touch it!” and they reply with “Oh! I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean to offend you!” while continuing to compliment it. Those people are more okay because they show remorse. I’m especially sweet to the kids who say sorry.
There have been 2 instances, in the nearly 3 years I’ve been working for my current boss, where I have gotten rude replies to my dislike towards being touched...
One, where, while I was pushing a cart out for a young mother and her kid, a middle aged man ran up behind me and YANKED my ponytail. While in the parking lot, with the customer, I took out a hair tie and twisted my ponytail into a bun and the guy YELLED at me from his motorcycle “DON’T HIDE IT!”.
And Today, 01/29/2019, at around 2:30ish... A few minutes before I clocked out. It wasn’t too busy, so I asked a grey haired woman in a grey hoodie who had about 3 bags if she’d like me to take her groceries out. She responded “Sure! Its your job isn’t it!”. Like usual, I grabbed the bags and walked next to her. We got maybe 10 feet between the register she just got checked out at and the door and she starts talking about how pretty my hair was, ALL WHILE GRABBING AT MY ARM AND SHOULDER in an effort to get me to turn around so she could TOUCH MY HAIR. I instinctively jerked away from her and looked at her like “What the hell!”. She asked me “What’s wrong?”, so I responded with “I really don’t like it when people touch my hair.” and she told me to “PIN IT UP!”. She got offended, took her groceries and walked towards the door. As she left the building, I called after her with the phrase “I SHOULDN’T HAVE TO!”.
Let me set the stage for the gravity of today’s incident:
By now, people touching my hair is a topic of discussion around my work. All my coworkers and bosses know better. It gets mentioned at EVERY Harassment meeting we have! It got brought up by one of my coworkers LAST TUESDAY when HR was present. My boss has told me that when someone touches me, I am to report it to a manager... Especially directly to him. He has told everyone in my store that we are not paid to put up with abuse from customers... Especially physical contact. I’m even conditioned to jerk away whenever I see someone bring their hands towards my body... Especially when they’re complimenting my hair as they do it.
I went to one manager... That manager is a pacifist, and wouldn’t do anything. I went to the Store Trainer, she told me that I should tell my boss and if I can’t find him before I leave, to write a detailed note. All of the cashiers heard about it... Only one wasn’t entirely sympathetic... And that was the Preacher’s Wife who hates me... She said “Well, you shouldn’t look so inviting!”...
I wrote the note, and as I put it on his desk, my boss walked back into the store. I explained it and he started looking up the security footage.
We are not obligated to let you all touch us! If we look nice, its because we want to because we wanna look decent! We are NOT paid to let you touch us! The fact that you think its okay because I’m the employee and you are the customer is fucking bullshit! DO NOT tell us to change how we look because you can’t be bothered to control yourselves!
Lovely. Scratch your inner ear, cough, sneeze AND wipe your nose at the counter before handing me money. Let me just douse myself in hand sanitizer now…
The customer's always right 🙃
So today on “things Ive done at work that probably go against OSHA regulations” one of my managers handed me and a coworker some citristrip, one paint brush, and single plastic putty knife and asked us to strip the paint off the two bathroom doors, prime them, then paint them…. in an hour and a half. So an hour and a half later, we are still scraping paint off these doors (I have since found a scraper like item to use to scrap) and since they didn’t give us enough stripper for two doors it’s taking forever. Said manager comes back over and is all “how haven’t you finished this yet!?!?! These should be at least primed by now” And me and my coworker were just like… have you ever stripped paint off of something before?!?!
One time, I was walking back up front from my lunch with my backpack on my back, earbuds in my ears, name tag off and my phone in my hand and a customer ripped my earbud out of my ear and demanded that I answer a question about the store for them.
Like, fucking seriously? You clearly know I work there, but can you NOT see that I’m not on the clock? First of all, you think its okay to consciously grab someone’s earbud out of their ear... Secondly, you think its okay because you know I work there... But you can’t put two and two together to make out the fact that I’m not clocked in and therefore don’t work there until my name tag is on, back is put on the shelf, and my phone is in my pocket...
